Caiden was amazed as he stepped through the gate. He didn't get to do it often and when he did, it was usually for serious injuries requiring a trauma surgeon to go there and treat the patient before moving them. However he never did any doctors without borders or humanitarian aid missions and this isn't exactly a typical one considering he is on another planet not in another country.

"You, on my hip. We will be there in ten minutes and then your lot can start doing your thing." Caiden nodded as he noticed the Sergeant Major looking at his watch compass, Caiden just hoped this Marine didn't skip navigation class or whatever they call it in Jarhead training, but Caiden didn't say it out loud.

"You got it, Sergeant Major." 1st Lieutenant West replied as he waited for the Marine to lead the way, which is what they usually do off-world on missions like these. Caiden is an Air Force Medical Doctor and although those rivalries don't exist as much between the doctors in the military compared to other specialties, he definitely agreed with the common sayings that float around the SGC about the Marines.

The walk didn't take long, only ten minutes or so, Caiden didn't keep track he was just amazed how much it looked like Earth. The spokesperson or leader for the locals was clearly startled by the Marines but you can never be too safe and if the Goa'uld did try to attack during this humanitarian mission, which they wouldn't mind doing, then he'd be glad they were there. The area where the Doc's were supposed to set up wasn't exactly sterile or nice but if it was then the chances were they wouldn't need the Tau'ri medical staff.

"Looks like the next couple of villages over got wind of the free healthcare." Caiden nodded and agreed, "Yeah, I guess so. Let's just hope they don't need surgery. This place will give them an infection... or two."

"I don't know about that, Doc. These people have been rubbing dirt in the wound and walking it off for two thousand years, if this planet ain't killed 'em yet, it ain't likely to start just cause you open one or two up." He dug out a hard candy and tossed it to one of the kids who'd just finished a quick check over by one of the other doctors and sent away with a simple antibiotic shot. That was Taft's way of winning hearts and minds. Doctor saved their lives, but they always remembered the armed bad ass handing out jawbreakers. "I'm sure we can get the local witch doctor to hand over his hut if you really need it."

"I don't know about that, Doc. These people have been rubbing dirt in the wound and walking it off for two thousand years, if this planet ain't killed 'em yet, it ain't likely to start just cause you open one or two up." Caiden shrugged, he had a point but of course that is why their lives are shorter in comparison. "That is also why the ancient people of Earth had considerably shorter lives than we do now. Rubbing dirt in wounds, usually doesn't help anyone. Let's just say we're spoiled on Earth with our technology and equipment. Although, if need be, I can operate here, it's not like they can sue me for malpractice especially considering trauma surgeons operate in Iraq and Afghanistan all the time without the necessary resources."

"I'm sure we can get the local witch doctor to hand over his hut if you really need it." Caiden looked and shook his head, how do people live like this, he wondered. "If I need to operate on anyone, we could use it. In the meantime, I think I'll be okay. Hopefully I won't have to perform surgery on anyone, if I do then... we'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Caiden said as he placed his medical kit and backpack down and looked around at the obviously long day to come.

"And yet, here we are. Alive, and only now being diluted. Ain't history grand?" Taft was staring off into the distance, his head turning slowly to create a new angle but his eyes staying on the same point in space. Something had his attention, even as he handed another hard candy out. Taft rolled his neck. "What do you know about fixing blunt force trauma, doc?" There wasn't much to be done about it, except to occasionally set a broken bone. Pain meds helped. So did laying out a solid beating on the source. Taft moved away from the doctor and acquired a woman from the line, she was carrying a child who was practically curled into a ball. He led her back to the doctor.

What she revealed, with bruised arms, was a child who looked twice as bad as she did. Bruises in every shade indicated layers of abuse. She said not a word, merely held forth her son for healing.

"True, but a lot of people died back then that could be saved nowadays. That is medical advancement for ya." Caiden said as he slid some gloves on not wanting to catch anything while he was out here and especially something that is alien, they may be human and all but this is another planet, it may look like Earth but it isn't.

"I know plenty about blunt forced trauma and I used to deal with it quite often back at Mass General and even some at the US Air Force, David Grant Medical Center however back at the SGC, I don't deal with it quite often." Caiden said as the Sergeant Major brought a woman and her boy to the front of the line. Caiden silently sighed as he could tell they were clearly abused by someone but that is more of the Sergeant Majors problem than it is his, he is the Marine afterall not Caiden.

Caiden had no idea what to really do, the kid was covered in bruises and the mother was pretty bad herself. It is probably the father and husband who did it but Caiden can't tell what is happening under the skin and if he has broken bones or even internal bleeding, this could require surgery. "M'am, what happened?" Caiden asked and she wouldn't speak, he knows they speak english as practically everyone in the Galaxy does but she must've been too scared to reply, Caiden took a step back to speak with the Sergeant Major in private.

"Sergeant Major, this kid is seriously beat up as is the mother. They're obviously abused as you no doubt know but I can't treat them here. I could give them pain medication but they could have broken bones or even internal bleeding, and I don't feel comfortable sending them back to continue being abused. The mother is obviously scared and not talking, that doesn't help matters. I would prefer to take them both to Earth..." Caiden said, leaving it at that. The SGC isn't a humanitarian hospital nor a free clinic but we are here and now Caiden needs to take action that is in the best interest of his patients, they may be on another planet but there has to be something they could do.

Taft looked around, watching the reactions of others. The doc could investigate at the blast center but Taft liked to look from the outer edge and work his way in. There were some dirty looks for the woman... no, there were a lot of dirty looks. Completely out of proportion to jumping a few spaces in line, especially considering that she was just getting her child looked at and staying out of the treatment space herself. The silence from the woman said she wasn't making excuses for anyone, that was usual in domestic situations, or that she was hopeless that it would help. If hopeless, why bother coming to do the doctor?

When the doctor pulled him aside Taft casually agreed with the obviously statement by repeating the word. "I think this might be culture thing, doc. I'd go beat the fella within an inch of his life, relocate her to another village myself, but there is zero compassion in the faces of these others. When the radio window comes up, call the SGC and tell them I concur with your assessment of bringing her in for more intensive care. I'll have Sgt. Bailey take her aside and keep her under observation until we get the decision. Maybe Doc Claire can get her talking back at home base." He turned, snapping his fingers to get eyes on him, then pointed at a female Sgt. who came jogging over to him. "I'm detailing you to this woman and her child, keep her isolated and comfortable but under watch."
