Section 3: General Information
--------------------------------------------

A. Personal History

Born into a close knit Irish-Catholic family, Jason was the oldest of three children born to Patrick and Rachel Burke. Being the oldest sibling, Jason learned early on the importance of leadership, communication, a strong work ethic and teamwork, traits that would serve him well later in life. At the same time, his parents stressed the importance of faith, putting others before himself and to never give up. When he was four, Jason got involved in Hapkido and the scouting program, the latter of which sparked in Jason a love of adventure. He also learned Irish from his grandfather, who had come to the U.S. from Ireland at a young age. At the same time, Jason gained a fear of heights after climbing a tree in the back yard of the house he grew up in, freezing when he saw how high up he was. It took his parents over an hour to get him to come down and something that would remain with him for the rest of his life.

When in middle school, Jason came across his grandfather's army things, which peaked his interest. Hearing that his grandfather was in the Rangers got Jason's attention even more. The more Jason talked with him, the more he wanted to join the army. It was something he kept to himself for a few years, unsure of how his parents would react when he told them. In the meantime, Jason stayed focused on school, Hapkido and the scouting. Jason proved to be a gifted student, but it was clear to his teachers that he wasn't going to be the type to stay in a classroom after he left high school.

At the same time, it wasn't until his junior year in high school that he got the nerve to tell his parents about going into the military. His father was supportive, but his mother was hesitant, which Jason noticed. His mom made it clear that she wanted him to get a college degree after he left high school. It took the better part of a year, but Jason managed to convince his mom that he could do both. With that out of the way, Jason refocused on schooling, martial arts and the scouting program. By the time he graduated from high school, he had a black belt in Hapkido and his Eagle scout badge. He didn't graduate at the top of his class, but he was good enough to get into the Catholic University of America and the Army ROTC wing at nearby Georgetown University.

Jason majored in History and Religious Studies while at CUA, keeping up with training in Hapkido at the same time. On the ROTC side, he was selected for the Army's Airborne, Air Assault and Northern Warfare Schools. Of the three, going to the airborne school was the most taxing for Jason as he had to face his fear of heights during tower week. The experience nearly caused him to have a panic attack, but his close friend, and fellow ROTC cadet, Keven Rudoff, helped him though it. Jason managed to get over his fear and earn his jump wings before going back to CUA, where he would end up graduating summa cum laude.

After graduating and getting his commission into the regular army, Jason was assigned to an infantry platoon at Fort Lewis. While there, Jason would prove himself as a capable officer who put the interests of the men under his command before himself. It wasn't long before Jason was promoted to First Lieutenant and made a company Executive Officer. He would stay at Fort Lewis until the next open for Ranger training came up, which Jason put in for. After getting selected and passing the initial phase, Jason entered Ranger training. While he found the training difficult, Jason's never give up attitude, resilience and sheer will power, along with his faith, kept him going, earning him quiet praise from the training cadre.

At the end of his training course, Jason was one of the top in his group. He was assigned to a company at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he would become a hand to hand combat expert and special forces K9 handler. During this time, he would train in hostage rescue, S.E.R.E. and meet army veterinary officer, and fellow First Lieutenant, Dr. Megan Kelley when he brought in his K9 partner Shadow, a German bloodline German Shepherd, for his exam. During the exam, Jason found out she was of Irish heritage like himself after hearing Megan speak softly in Irish. In the conversation that followed, he learned that Megan was Irish-Catholic and into martial arts as well. Jason made up his mind to see her again when he had the chance, which was difficult when his group got deployed on a mission to Africa, during which Jason and the others were caught in a fire fight during the exfiltration, an action that lead to two men on the team being injured. Jason was almost injured during that same mission had one of the other Rangers not pushed him out of the way of gunfire. After that mission, Jason made up his mind to ask Megan out, which he did after getting back to base.

Jason was with Megan for a year and half before he proposed to her. Following their wedding, honeymoon, the birth of twin sons and a mission that saw him promoted to captain, Jason was approached by his commanding officer, who informed him the he, along with Megan, were selected for a top secret posting in Colorado. Puzzled at first, mainly due to the fact that his CO didn't give him many details, Jason pondered the offer for two days before accepting. The next thing he knew, he and Shadow were getting introduced to the Stargate program, much to his surprise. Upon arriving, Jason was informed that he would be assigned to SG-6 given his training as a K9 handler and in hostage rescue. A year and a half in, Jason has shown the same dedication to the SGC that he showed while in the Rangers.

B. General Personality Jason is a stern, but fair man: he is the guy you want on your side if your in trouble, but not the one you want coming after you. While he is introverted, Jason is not anti-social or friendless as some people make him out to be. He has a few close friends and those who really know Jason say that he is one of the most loyal and friendly people around. While he enjoys being around others, Jason takes time to be alone to recharge. As a former soldier he does his best to live up to the values of the army and the warrior ethos of mission first, never giving up and never leaving anyone behind.

He is also a devout Catholic and as such he has a strong moral compass. He only shoots to defend himself and only when he has no option left him. He is quick to defend his faith, but is never mean about it. At the same time, it irks him when people make misinformed comments about his faith or when they ridicule others. While Jason is unflappable, being an Irishman, he has a temper and does his best to keep it under control. However there are times when it comes out and it isn't pretty when it happens, mainly when people try to tell him how to do his job or when facing someone who harmed an animal, woman or child. At the same time, Jason is prone to moments of jumping to conclusions or over working himself.

i. Character Strengths: Jason is loyal, honest, dedicated, strong willed and hard working. His biggest strength is his loyalty, which stems from his introverted nature and military training. Its something that he takes seriously, having little tolerance for those who are disloyal.

ii. Character Weaknesses: Bullheadedness: Jason is a rather stubborn person, once he makes up his mind, very little can change it. At the same time, he can jump to conclusions about things, mainly where those close to him are involved. Jason also has a tendency to over work himself, having to be told to stop so he doesn't burn out.

iii. Personal attitude and demeanour: Introverted and observant, Jason is a quick yet deep thinker who has a knack for making deep statements. He keeps to himself when not on duty, preferring to read or have deep conversations with people that he knows well. It takes him a while to open up to people, only doing so once its clear he can trust them. While he has a stern exterior, beneath that is a man who genuinely cares about those close to him and will defend them to the hilt.

C. Additional Information Jason serves as a hand to hand combat specialist, working with a soldier from Australia that he met not long after coming to the SGC.

Ancient gene: no

RP Sample (in character):

Jason stepped off the elevator at the SGC with Shadow in tow. The team he was on was heading out on a mission this day. Both him and Shadow were geared up for the trip though the stargate. When he first came to the SGC, Jason was understandably worried as to the effect that gate travel would have on Shadow. He was releaved to found out that Shadow suffered no ill effects from traveling though the gate during the first mission they went on.

Jason met up with the team he was assigned to once in the embarkation room, double checking Shadow's vest before doing the same with his gear. Seconds after he finished, the Stargate activated. Jason looked over to it after it opened up while standing with Shadow and the rest of the team, still in wounder of the device that stood before him and the others. He was certain that seeing the Stargate turn on would not cease to amaze him, and when it did, he would know that was the time for him to hang it up.

For now, he stayed focused on the mission he and the others were tasked with. When the signal was given, Jason went up the ramp with Shadow, crossing himself at the same time and speaking softly in Irish before stepping though with his K9 partner. Moments later, they were on the planet in question. Jason raised his P90 and scanned the area as he moved away from the gate with Shadow. No one was around, but Jason knew from experience that could change at the drop of a hat. Jason heard the rest of the team come though as he stood guard with Shadow, getting the feeling that someone else was watching them.
