"That we are," Taft responded to d'Aufai's pronouncement of losing the element of surprise. His grandfather would have said they were killing daylight. He then raised an eyebrow as Davidson suddenly jumped on the snark bandwagon. "I can only put up with attitude out of one of you at a time, so paper/rock/scissors d'Aufai for the privaledge or stow it. And we don't trudge. We advance." He grinned and stood at the end, to take the sting out of the reprimand. Then he looked at d'Aufai who was exclaiming in her native tongue.

He stepped up the rise, looked, and then checked the map on his forearm. "Ah, that would be the abandoned camp of Apophis. We've still got about 20+ kilometers before we hit the camp our people are, presumably, at. Assuming the trail sticks we should get there mid day if we keep going. Midnight if we hunker down through the day. Haven't decided yet but I'm leaning toward humping it straight through, killing some Jaffa, and running for the gate with our people. After due diligence of course."

"We'll see if they stopped at that camp, we might be catching up faster than we thought. It's ideal for a stop if the Jaffa were to be inclined to such, but they'll have moved on by now even if they had paused." Taft shouldered the staff weapon and headed back for the trail, since everybody had proclaimed their readiness. They still had a lot of walking ahead of them and Marine Recon was coming home with the win on this mission.

Sofia looked over her shoulder towards Taft that made his not yet made up plan public. She looked back at the camp, if the people were there and they walk in firing. It would cause some life's "attendez (Wait), we could rather split in this situation" not going in discussion if the plan is foolish or not, just go with the flow she thought.

"I mean, the plausible idea that we storm the camp is likely to have a kill ratio of 80%, but most likely 70% on our side. To make this less, we could rather split up and have a team get the members of SG-13 that are still alive, while the others use a diversion" Sofia looked at the other members of her team.

More hiking, but she supposed that was better than lots of shooting. First mission on an SG team and it's an exercise in hauling ass through a forest. Oh well. At least hiking around a lot was nothing more than a simple test of endurance.

Joey was all ready to start motoring again when their second in command made a suggestion. "Attendez, we could rather split in this situation. I mean, the plausible idea that we storm the camp is likely to have a kill ratio of 80%, but most likely 70% on our side. To make this less, we could rather split up and have a team get the members of SG-13 that are still alive, while the others use a diversion."

Seventy percent of nine people was, what.... 6.3? How the hell are 6.3 of us gonna die? Math oddities aside, it probably would be easier to slip in and rescue SG-13 with a small group. Not that she enjoyed the idea of going into the heart of the enemy camp with less firepower, but there wasn't much she could do to change that unfortunate lack. Might as well go with the best idea they had.

"Makes sense to me, sarge," Davidson agreed as she stood back up. "You and d'Aufui could keep them pinned down long enough for me and Blake to pop in, free the team, and bug out." The sniper and the marine vet drawing the enemy's fire while she slipped in with the medic to lick wounds and haul ass out of there; nothing too fanciful, but it'd probably work.

Probably.

Mere smirked, she couldn’t help it, and it really wasn’t appropriate, but the SgtMjr had such a way with words. She resumed taking the last few slugs of water to give herself time to regain some composure; she was tired and sore, and could totally see why the Captain was developing a hump, as for the Lt, cultural differences was her shout. It also wasn’t her problem, she’d just keep her mouth shut and try to ignore the stiffness she knew was gonna come tomorrow.
She listened as she stood up, brushing off some of the detritus that had adhered itself to her ass whilst she was taking a breather.

Taft seemed to be of the option that the camp that the Lt had spotted as was abandoned and wouldn’t have SG-13, although they might have stopped a while there. He also seemed in favour of checking it out. Mere considered that a solid notion.

Her flippant remark about staging a daring rescue, as well as the suggestion they march on, storm the camp, kick some ass and high tail it out of there, seemed to cause some debate from the rest of the party.

Mere didn’t like those odds; That sounded like a whole lot of risk, and the chance that their rescue mission was going to turn into a bloodbath with a body count.

“It has merit. I say we scope this camp out as we pass on by, but when it comes to the main event perhaps smaller might work out better – However I wouldn’t like to call it now without seeing what we’re going to be going up against” She threw her vote into the open.

She had no problem going in with the Captain, and getting their guys out. She’d seen the Lt and SgtMjr take down the enemy with precision, and trusted they would get the majority of the snake heads face down quickly. Still, she was not about to blindly agree to storm a camp without knowing just HOW many she’d be sneaking through, two amongst a handful was one thing, two amongst a hundred was a recipe for getting shot, and Mere hated getting shot.

Taft listened to the lot of them, his eyes aimed at the ground roughly equidistant between all four as he visualized what they were saying while adding in the realities of assets and objectives. It was all speculative, as they had yet to lay eyes on their people let alone the camp. When it came time to run Taft would end up carrying someone if anyone needed carrying. He was larger than his companions, it was just logic. Plus he had a drum full of 00 buckshot shells that would allow him to spray and pray one-handed without losing much in the way of effectiveness so that he could still contribute to the retreat. A retreat that was likely to be under fire even with the best laid plans considering the distance they were going to have to cover overland by foot.

"Blake wins this round. I'll take it all under advisement but lets see where this rescue is to be executed before we start making master plans. Which means we won't be splitting up. Not until such a thing looks necessary and that's when we'll discuss it as well. Move out." He turned and started once again on the trail they were following of boot scuffs, broken branches, heel divots, and the like. As they moved forward the forest began to give way and, after a kilometer or so, it ended. Opening up on more of the scrub land where Taft took a moment to check his map. No sooner had they all stopped moving, however, than he suddenly held up a clenched fist and dropped to a knee.

He heard sounds. Very human sounds... coming from the next drop off. Ahead the land indicated a series of dips and rises split asunder by a very large washed out micro-valley. Maybe 20ft or so deep, likely a former lake turned river turned dried up remnant. Taft waited a moment, listening, before he very quietly removed his pack and his assault shotgun and indicating for d'Aufai to do the same. He laid both off to the side, toward Davidson. Then he indicated she and Blake were to stay put and prepare to give cover fire. Then he gestured to d'Aufai, indicating they were both going to slither through the scrub up to the edge of the little valley. She was a sniper, she'd know how to do it without silhouetting herself against the sky for anyone they spotted below.

Taft then pulled his side harm, gripped the slide with his teeth, laid on his stomach, and began dragging himself toward the edge of the little valley. When they got there, both saw only what the Admin told them they saw (so wait for it).

Getting quite annoyed with the stupidity of the American arrogant, Sofia was actually hoping that someone get shot. Just to make her point valid, no its all about cowboy style and hoping everything was going to be all fine. The worst case scenario was a pure fact, SG-13 was death and they were walking into trap without even considering the plausible possibilities that is surrounding them.

Taft gave out a signal towards her to get the assault rifle out, she grabs it and watched his moves and gestures. Nodding towards the idea to slither towards the edge of the little valley, she did what was asked of her and got towards her position looking over the edge and getting into gun position. This was gonna be a bad idea, that was for sure....

OOC: Very unclear in the post then, my bad...fixed it.

((OOC: the only assault shotgun that was brought on this mission was by Taft, no mention has been made of anyone else bringing one. That shotgun has just been placed on the ground in front of Davidson. d'Aufai does not have an assault shotgun, just the standard weaponry. Also, Taft did not signal her to retrieve said shotgun. He signalled her to drop her pack and assault weapon, and crawl towards the lip of the valley, remaining in cover.))

Evidently that was the end of that discussion. She was a little relieved that they weren’t planning on parting ways as of yet, the idea was a good one, it just needed tweaking, and those tweaks were likely to be influenced by what they saw when time came.

She fell back into place as the party moved on again, struggling through the forest for another klick, a lot more alert than she’d been prior to their little break. On all alert, she kept her gun close, safety on, finger poised, watching and listening as they moved through towards, what seemed to be the edge of the woods.

They’d barely broken free of the tree line however when the SgtMjr called them to a halt, and dropping down behind him, she could hear what had likely caught his attention. It was Life Jim, and probably of the reptile worshiping inclination knowing their luck.

Watching and acknowledging the instructions given, Mere eased the safety off her P-90 and adjusted her stance ready to light it up if she needed to. She watched Taft and d’Aufai as they slid forward and moved through towards the drop off, their forms barely visible unless you knew they were there

Casting a sideways look at the Captain, she offered a brief half smile, before turning her attentions back towards the valley ahead. She hated waiting, ever since she could remember, didn’t like waiting in line, didn’t like waiting for anything – she’d wait if she was ordered but she didn’t like it – and waiting for an exchange of fire was the worst type of waiting ever.

Well, back to the hiking. Joey shrugged indifferently as Taft decided it was a better course of action to do some scouting first and fell into line, taking a deep breath for the walking they still had ahead of them. God knows she was getting plenty of exercise, though it would have been nice if had felt like the workout was actually advancing them towards their objective. It was increasingly starting to feel like they were just going around in metaphorical circles.

That all changed when something that didn’t quite sound like just more leaves rustling in the wind greeted all their ears. Taft instantly signaled a halt, and started moving up with d’Aufui while signaling Davidson and Blake to hang back. Made sense to her--let the two people who specialized in combat stick their necks out while the medic and egghead stayed out of the direct line of fire.

Granted, that meant sitting on their asses (or laying on their stomachs, in this case) while waiting to know if it was clear, but that was better than a faceful of staff blast. On the bright side, she supposed, whatever was out there might not even be Jaffa; for all they knew, SG-13 had escaped their captivity and was grumbling their way back to the gate below the drop-off up ahead. Wouldn’t that make it so much easier? Grab the team, hit some cover for a minute to administer any first aid they needed, then haul ass for the gate. Bam. Mission Accomplished.

Checking to make sure her P90’s safety was off, she briefly returned Blake’s smile and hoped she hadn’t just jinxed them with that thought.

As Taft and d'Aufai peered over the edge of the ridge, the hearkening dawn displayed a small, undoubtedly temporary camp that was just beginning to stir.

Five tents, forming a perimeter around a stockade, a stockade in which they could see six people: five of them were clearly SG-13, their uniforms visible, even in the dim light, and the sixth... well, they had no idea who she was. Dark skin, curly hair... and was that a Jaffa symbol on her forehead? It was impossible to tell.

In the camp itself, two campfires were alight, and there were clusters of Jaffa, twelve in total, huddled around the fires. There was movement in two of the tents, but it was impossible to tell precisely how many Jaffa were in the camp itself.
