It was like watching inspector gadget sniffing out the crime scene, Sofia was feeling a bit overwhelm by the way this was going. The battle field was confirmed, SG team had done quite some firing to defend their position. The question was who was behind it, there were two teams in this case that could be the team that got the SG team.

"That explains it then. Spread out and look for bodies, just in case, but I doubt we'll find any."

Sofia rolled her eyes as began to look around for any potential bodies. Her eyes stopped at some bushes as she walked towards it and leans forward pushing away the branches as she looked over her shoulder "Found one" she stated as she looked back as she shrugs not knowing whom party he was from, but he was definitely death.

The "body" find was convenient, certainly. Barely concealed, it was the body of a young Jaffa, his face pale and waxy in death. It was almost as though he had been left there for someone to find...

And then a blast from a staff weapon rent the air, narrowly missing Sofia, setting ablaze the bush that she had found to be partially covering the body.

Moving from her ‘find’ Mere carefully traversed the ground, ensuring she didn’t mess up anything that might remain of the altercation and stood off to the side and behind the Captain, taking a look at the shells that were illuminated in Taft’s flashlight. Evidently, he had seen enough, and following his lead she turned her own night vision back on and followed him down the hill, taking care to place her feet carefully. It wouldn’t do to go ass over tit if her foot caught in one of the small scrub plants the littered the dirt slope.

The sinking feeling had returned to roost in her gut, it had been one thing to speculate that the team had encountered hostilities, it was another altogether to find evidence of it and know for a fact that Stevens, and the others had been target practise for some trigger happy Snake Heads.

“Spread out and search for bodies” Nodding, Mere moved through the scrub bush and began a sweep of her immediate area. Look down, place foot, side to side, repeat. This was no longer a search and rescue, this was turning into recovery, and that was possibly one of the worst kind of mission she could imagine being involved in. She didn’t mind them bloody, broken, bleeding or worse. Dead however, it was hell, and it pissed her right off. Damn Reptile Squad were going to eat a whole lot of lead if she came across them, provided that it was sanctioned, she was all about payback but not at the cost of more of her own.

Close enough to take in the rundown of the likely plan of action, Mere couldn’t help but grip her weapon a little tighter. It made sense what the SgtMjr was saying, explained the lack of a welcoming party, and was carefully worded enough to not reveal either way whether he thought the team were alive and kicking, wounded and fading, or dead and buried.

Jerking her head up as the accented voice filtered through the night, Mere had barely moved half a foot towards her position when the sound of a staff weapon pierced the peace of the night. Dropping down into a crouch and keeping her head low, Mere swivelled round in a 180^ arc trying to locate the source of the shot.

Apparently they weren’t so alone after all.

The ignited bush was a glaring hot spot on the night vision, and Mere had to resist the urge to tear them from her head. Doing so would mean not being able to see the targets, wherever the hell they were.
Crab walking in her dropped down crouch, she shuffled forward to be closer to the others, ensuring that she kept her flank angles covered as she did, the end result being a tedious crawl, pause, scout, repeat sort of motion.

A second shot fired, and Mere thought she caught glimpse of the tail of the shot, but she just couldn’t be sure. There were no boogies immediately visible, and she was beginning to feel like a sitting duck.

"Anyone got a visual?" Her voice low she kept her eyes peeled, hoping what little cover there was, was going to be enough to prevent her being the next target.

Joey was rather understandably surprised to find her quiet walk over to examine the body d’Aufai had discovered interrupted by the sickening whump of a staff blast. There was the ambush, finally. If there wasn’t the potential for a dozen bright yellow balls of plasma to be hurtling towards her head in the next few seconds, she might actually have been relieved that they were at last going to get this inevitable firefight over with.

Merely catching a sidelong glimpse of something flaming up briefly from the sheer heat of a staff blast was enough to make her hit the dirt. Wasn’t her first ambush rodeo, and it definitely wouldn’t be the last, though she was certainly kicking herself mentally for not having seen this coming a few seconds earlier. After even her brief time in the Middle East, you’d think the old dead-body-lure trick would be something she might actually be able to pick up on.

With her head low and body altogether rather scrunched into a crouch, she hobbled over to the nearest piece of cover while a dozen obscenities ran through her head. ”No patrols, huh?” she muttered in quiet remembrance of what Taft had been saying just moments ago. Clearly they had rushed to in an inaccurate tactical evaluation based on incomplete information regarding the location and disposition of the enemy force. Or something.

”Anyone got a visual?" Blake’s question was low so as not to give away their position, but it was still shortly followed by yet another blast flying out of the darkness towards the team. This time, however, Joey was at precisely the right angle to see what direction the blast had come from. Not that she could actually make out anything in the darkness over yonder, but it was better than nothing.

Shrugging, she quietly replied, ”No visual here, but a general idea of what to light up.” She proceeded to do just that; with a definite care to her movements she lifted her supposed P90, lined up with where the last bit of fire had come from, and started letting off short, controlled bursts.

The moment the French officer had spoken up, the heartbeat within the statement of a found body, Taft had moved the other direction to vanish amongst the low trees and scrub plants. It had taken several tense seconds, several shots from the staff weapons, before Taft was closing in on his targets. He paused for a moment when a suppressed P90 started gently chuffing but that worked to his advantage as well as the two Gou'ald minions sought cover. He waited, screwing the silencer onto the end of his sidearm while he watched the two duck low and move toward him.

That was when Taft lit them up. The shorter of the two took four rounds to the chest, the impacts throwing sparks off his armor as he was stood up and fell back. The motion pushed the other backward and he stumbled across a scrub bush and right into the line of fire of whichever team member was firing at the pair's former location. His armor sparked as well as two full bursts tore into him, the dull thunks a clear indicator even if the sparks weren't.

Taft keyed his radio. "Hold fire, stay down, clear your lines of fire." He stayed in his little stand of bushes, scanning their surroundings through his night vision goggles in search of additional targets. After a few moments he double clicked his mic to signal he was clear and moved over to the two Jaffa to check their allegiance markings.

With the gunfire, the staff fire stopped. There wasn't another sound in the area, not even birds or night creatures. The only sound was the breathing of SG-6.

When Taft checked, the Jaffa were two of Apophis' men, now very much dead.

Sofia did not even blink as the blast past her face, her reflection went towards the direction of the blast as she took cover. She lay down next the Jaffa body, that was already smelling so lovely by the hours it lay there. Looking around to scan where they were, Sofia could hear shots being fired

"Hold fire, stay down, clear your lines of fire."

Taft communicated via the radio, making it clear that it was safe again in the area. Sofia stood up slowly with the area in check and her goggles up. Those shots were heard for sure, so another patrol was going to come very soon "We got to get moving, we might get more visitors soon" she spoke out towards the rest as she walks towards Taft location keeping the area in check and looking at the two bodies.

"Those symbols, they are familiar...." Sofia spoke out her mind.

Hitting the deck as another volley of shots pulsed through the night, Mere scrambled back into a shooting position and searched for the source. Hearing the Captain to her left pick a direction, Mere followed suit, squeezing her own trigger and feeling the jolt the weapon emitted as it flung lead out into the plains.

Ready for a second burst, Mere pulled finger from trigger as the SgtMjr’s voice sounded out through the radio, she kept it close however waiting for a follow up order. The double click came, and she relaxed, the tension almost visibly dissolving from her upper back and shoulders. Evidently the coast was clear, for the time being that was.

Standing slowly, she scanned for the others and caught sight of the Lt, rising up from her prone position next to the corpse, or was it bait, of the dead Jaffa. The fire that had been sparked next to her position was now mostly extinguished, the dust from the successive blasts smothering it down to glowing embers. Realising just how close the blast must have come to her team mate, Mere looked her up and down, not noticing any immediate sign of injury.

“I’ll second that” Mere nodded in agreement at the suggestion they move their asses out of the immediate area, and carry on the plan as agreed. “Lt, that blast was close, any damage?” She was pretty sure that nothing was out of sorts with the woman, especially judging by the fact that she was already moving to meet up with Taft, but Mere didn’t see the harm in double checking.

Dropping down behind as they regrouped, Mere gave Davidson a tap on the arm, “Good eye”. Far as Mere was concerned the Captain had done well in spotting their assailants before they’d had chance to pop off a few more shots. Smiling briefly as she issued her complement, she was back to game face by the time they had assembled around their deceased attackers.

“Apophis” She answered Sofia’s musings, the symbol was easily recognisable by anyone who’d ever done the reading, had a run in, or of course looked a at Teal’c’s head at any point ever. “So does this mean we’re paying them a visit, or taking a stroll down to camp number 2?” If the SgtMjr was right in his earlier assessment, these ‘men’ could have been part of the uninvolved side that was interested in knowing what had happened. Course they could also be goons from the merry old band of kidnappers.

Decisions, decisions.

At least it was all finished up quickly. Taft had managed to bring both of the Jaffa attacking them down with the utmost skill and efficiency, exactly as she would have expected from a veteran Marine. Pretty admirable, and it made her feel a hell of a lot better to know that he was watching their six as she carefully moved out of cover to check on the bodies.

She smiled upon hearing Blake’s compliment about her eyes. Responding with a not-quite-arrogant, ”Thanks for noticing,” the captain flipped the safety back on and hurried to investigate the spot where their assailants had gone down. Two typical Jaffa warriors, both with that exceedingly recognizable brand on their foreheads. Internally, she wondered if this was some sign that Apophis’ minions were the ones responsible for SG-13’s absence, or if they were just checking out where Heru’ur’s soldiers had done the deed.

”“So does this mean we’re paying them a visit, or taking a stroll down to camp number 2?” was the first notable question Joey heard asked. Almost immediately the captain herself spoke up while kneeling to confirm that their attackers were, in fact, dead. ”Or we could wait. I mean, they’re bound to check up on their missing patrol or ambush group sometime.” She reached down and grabbed a zat gun off of one of the dead Jaffa. ”Maybe we can take our own prisoners, get some more intel?”

Taft nodded absently, they were going to clear the area in short order but they had stuff to do. Sofia got halfway to asking a question, his fellow Sergeant answered it before he had to while echoing the sentiment of clearing the fire zone before more fire came along. Again, he nodded absently. "We're leaving, just as soon as we find the most obvious trail. Our people will drag their feet, brush up against bushes and the like, just as they were trained. We follow that and we'll know which camp got them." He glanced at Davidson, "Nice shooting, Annie Oakley, thanks for flushing them out."

Davidson then got requisitioned a weapon from one of the fallen and Taft grinned in her general direction. "My thoughts exactly. Their weapons will draw slightly less attention and cause different tactics than ours would." He took one of the staff weapons which he had the most likely build to be able to wield effectively, and then started stripping one of the armored collars off one of the bodies. He stuffed the piece of armor, that would produce their distinctive articulated helmet, into his mostly empty backpack. "Alright, somebody grab the other Zat and lets find that trail. The faster we find them the more likely they are to be able to travel with us efficiently." He stood and started circling the older battlefield.

It didn't take but a few moments for the trail to be spotted and a quick double check to ensure it wasn't a decoy, and then they were off.
