Jason was with his wife Megan during the rare time they were able to be together. While they were of the same rank, they still had to follow the fraternization rules that were in place.....at lest when the higher ups were were around. At the moment, Jason was sitting the mess area with her, talking to her in Irish about what had been going on in their day so far. Jason had learned Irish from his grandfather when he was growing up, which he was thankful that he did.

A few moments later, Jason glanced around where he and Megan were sitting, then leaned over and kissed her quickly after seeing that no higher ranking officers were around. Megan giggled a little when he did that to her. Jason smiled a little, then got back to eating. Tá tú fear dÚsachtach Megan whispered to him, trying to compose herself. Jason smiled a little when she said that to him. Go raibh maith agat, a stór he replied lightly, causing Megan to giggle a little more. As he said that, Jason didn't know who they would soon meet.

Her first evening on the Beta site, and Ruth was still trying to get her bearings. She had already scouted the perimeter of the camp, looking for anything that might be of any linguistic interest to her, but had found nothing, and that disappointed her. She had hoped that the reason she had been sent here was because there was something of linguistic interest, but, at least at first glance, there was nothing, and she was likely there as something of a "just in case" appointment.

Still, short of wandering off and exploring, there was little for her to do. Ruth had settled into the shared tent, stashing what few possessions she had brought with her, and now it was time for food. The mess tent was busy, and there were very few seats available. She didn't see anyone she knew, at least not with space at their table, so kept her eyes open for somewhere to sit.

Her ears eventually found her a seat, though, as she heard an unfamiliar language being spoken. It sounded vaguely European, but not anything she was able to understand. It was being spoken by a man and a woman she didn't recognise, and Ruth leaned down, smiling warmly. "Hi there," she said, her voice warm as she nodded at a spare seat at the table. "You mind if I join you? It's really busy in here, and... I guess I left it late!"

Jason looked over when he heard the woman's voice, as did Megan. "No, we don't mind" Jason replied while looking at her, a professional sound to his voice as he spoke to her. Megan nodded in agreement when Jason said to Ruth. "Been there, done that" Megan said honestly while watching Ruth. Jason glanced over to his wife when she said that, then looked back to Ruth. He never seen her around the place before, getting the feeling she wasn't military.

Not everyone is military around her Jason he said to himself. It was never lost on him that the civilian members of the site were just as important as the military members like himself. "I don't believe we have crossed paths before." he said to her as Megan watched them, having the same feeling that Jason did. At the same time, Jason was thankful that Shadow was back at their quarters, knowing how he would have reacted if he were present. Jason had Shadow around groups to get him used to being around others, but he knew that with him being a German Shepherd it took Shadow time to warm up to people given his protective nature.

Ruth got the distinct impression that she was interrupting something, and, were it not for the lack of other seating opportunities, she'd have backed up and found somewhere else to sit. As it was, this was about the only place available to her, and, interrupting or not, she smiled as warmly as she could manage, and took a seat next to the woman. "Thanks," she said, tucking herself in at the table.

She glanced between the man and the woman, getting the vibe that they were a couple, although she could be wrong. She nodded, taking a mouthful of mashed potato, as the man said he hadn't seen her around before. "First day on the Beta site," she confirmed. "I've been at the SGC nearly three years, though." She took a sip of water. "Ruth Tolliver, seemingly the linguistics department here at the moment. Please to meet you both."

Jason nodded a little when Ruth introduced herself to them. "Capt. Jason Burke....this is my wife Capt. Megan Burke, DVM." he replied, introducing them to her. "Hello, its nice to meet you as well." Megan said to Ruth, the fork she had still in her hand. "Welcome to the Beta site....give it time and you'll fit in." Jason said to her honestly and to the point. Megan looked over to him when he said that, then back to Ruth. "Pardon my husband, he's a direct and to the point kind of person." she commented.

Jason glanced over when she said that, then nodded a little while he continued to eat. "I heard that your the language expert around here." he said to her gently, hoping that didn't come off as to forward. Being an introvert, Jason was a to the point person, though sometimes that came off the wrong way and got people upset with him. He didn't take it personal, as most of the time those who got mad at him where people who took things to seriously or didn't want to hear an opinion other then their own.

Nodding as the man introduced himself and his wife, Claire was a little surprised she hadn't seen them around. It sounded as though the man, at least, had been around a while. That being said, she tended to live in the bowels of the mountain, and, unless she was offworld with a survey or archaeological team, didn't come into contact with the military on a daily basis. "Yeah, I've been offworld pretty regularly in the last few years," she explained. "I'm used to working with different people."

Ruth smiled, if a little enigmatically, at Jason saying he'd "heard" she was the language expert. She'd just told him she was the linguistics department, after all. "You could say that," she said, shrugging light, as though it was no big deal. "I couldn't help but overhear you conversation as I was passing." Her cheeks coloured a little, conscious that she might be coming across as an eavesdropper. "I can't say it's a language I know. What was it? Some form of Gaelic?" It had had the poetic lilt she associated with those languages.

Jason nodded a little when Ruth said that to him and Rachel, who nodded a little as well. "You have a good ear, it's Irish-Gaelic, part of the of the Indo-European language family." Jason replied as he held his fork in one hand at the same time. "He learned it from his grandparents." Rachel added. Jason glanced over when she said that, then back to Ruth. "That I did" he said gently before taking another bite of what he had in front of him, which Rachel did as well.

Jason looked back to Ruth at the same time. "I understand that your the language expert around here." he said after taking a drink and setting his cup back down. Rachel looked over to Jason when he said that, then back to Ruth. Being in special forces, Jason had been in a situation where he was in contact with non English speakers. He was thankful that he had a background in Latin, which made learning other languages easier for him. At the same time, he had a knack for picking out accents and being able to figure out where someone was from based on said accent.

((Is his wife's name Megan or Rachel? She's been Megan up until now!))

Ruth nodded as she took a sip of her water, contemplating the food in front of her. She thought it was chicken, but who knew? At least they weren't all tucking into MREs. She took a bite. It didn't taste too bad, at least. She nodded as the woman explained where Jason had learned the language. "That's pretty cool," she said, scooping up a forkful of mash potato. "I know it's not an easy language to learn. How'd your grandparents teach you?"

She gave Jason a patient smile as he remarked - again - that he had heard she was the language expert. "You could say that," she repeated, taking another sip of water. "Short of Daniel Jackson himself coming out here, they were looking for someone who spoke more than one or two languages, so here I am. How about you? What's your job around here?"

((her name's Megan, my bad))

Jason nodded in agreement, "It was all they spoke around me for the first few years after I was born." he replied. "I started to pick up on it when I was only enough to start speaking." he added after taking a sip of his drink. Megan nodded to that as Jason spoke, having learned the same way. After setting his cup down, Jason reached under the table and took Megan's hand in his. It was clear that they were a loving and loyal couple that would do what ever it took to protect the other.

Jason looked back to Ruth when she asked what his job was. "K9 handler for SG-6, I'm partnered with a German bloodline German Shepherd named Shadow." he replied while looking at her. "And I'm a veterinary officer here....which surprised me a little that they wanted me here as Jason is the only one with an animal around, though that could change from what I've been hearing." Megan added gently as Jason glanced over to her and nodded a little as he listened.

Ruth chewed, considering what Jason explained. Growing up in a bilingual or multilingual house was the easiest way to pick up another language, and might even make it easier for you to learn others. Neither of her parents had spoken anything other than a smattering of Spanish, so where her abilities with languages had come from, Ruth had no idea. "That's pretty awesome," she said, smiling as she took a sip of her drink. "Wish I'd had that growing up."

The couple weren't exactly making it subtle that they were together, and she wondered whether them being here at the Beta Site would raise someone's ire. They weren't the only couple there, though, not with Claire and Caleb around, but they weren't both military, and, as such, didn't have the complexities of the fraternisation rules to worry about.

"That's cool," Ruth replied, as the couple explained what the were doing on the Beta Site. She turned to Jason. "You left SG-6 behind to come here," she asked. As far as she knew, there wasn't an entire unit that was posted here at the moment; personnel were being handpicked for the skills that were needed at the time.
