Tuesday 4th November - 10.45am

Elizabeth stared at the paper in front of her, the same bit of paper she had been staring at for the last ten minutes, and would likely be staring at again for a good long while if something else didn’t come along.

She was surrounded by paperwork, the administrative minutiae that came hand in hand with the upcoming expedition. People had been chosen, so she was glad that the all the personnel files were cleared of her desk, and equipment and supplies were handled for the most part by the departments that needed whatever it was, although everything still worked its way across her peripheral for approval. After all, someone had to stop McKay from allocating ALL of the science equipment allowance for his own needs.

No this paper in front of her was personal, it was a draft for what she was telling Simon, the script for lack of a better phrase, that she would work from when she sent him her good bye explanation.

All members of the Atlantis expedition were being given opportunities to go home, to visit loved ones, and explain what was happening to those who had been given clearance. For Elizabeth though, she hadn’t wanted to do this in person, not for any personal cowardice, but because she had other things that needed to be done, and she had already said her goodbyes before coming to the Mountain, what she was doing now was an explanation.

Running a hand through her chestnut hair, letting it fall back into place on her shoulders, Elizabeth put her pen down, and slid the paper to one side, before picking up a request form from the never diminishing “to review” pile.

Scanning over it, she nodded approval to no one in particular in the quiet room she’d been allocated as make shift office, signed it, and moved it to a depressingly smaller pile of “things that have been done”, before repeating the process again.

Several repeats down, and she’d managed to make some sort of dent in the first pile, a noticeable increase in the second, and created a third pile she was tempted to call the “to hell with it” tray. So engrossed was she in the shuffling of her work load, she didn’t realise that any one was at the door, until it opened.

The meeting with Weir was completely last minute, in all honesty Caleb had thought he wouldn't be seeing the expedition leader right up until he was leaving to go to Atlantis. But when both himself and Claire had been in New Orleans and talk of sharing quarters came up, well the time was now to put that to the test.

Caleb smiled at Claire, he quite literally had his 'game' face on - although he was sure by now Claire could see through that facade really well - he was planning to charm his way to getting shared quarters. Or rather that was what he had planned anyway, whether that was going to work he actually didn't know, he didn't know Doctor Weir that well and had no idea how she was going to react.

He glanced up and down the corridor making sure no one was really around, before taking hold of Claire's hand. Despite everything that had happened in New Orleans, he knew to keep the relationship between himself and Claire out of the work place, well as much out of the work place as one could manage when you travel to different worlds near enough every day.

But holding her hand for a moment it was a comforting gesture not just for her, but for himself as well, it gave him his own courage to reach up and knock on the door. The knock seemed to echo into the corridor behind them, yet no one actually answered, Caleb briefly wondered if he had gotten the time wrong, hell even the day wrong for this meeting.

Frowning he reached up and opened the door, it was standard practise that if someone said they were going to be in a room and weren't there - with the amount of alien stuff lying around - was to open the door to look inside.

"Doctor Weir, ma'am," he said, spotting her sat behind a desk of what looked like quite literally a mountain of paperwork. Caleb was stood all straight back, to attention as he stepped a little further into the room, Weir might be a civilian but in this case she was still his superior, superior in all things related to Atlantis in that moment.

Claire recognised that look on Caleb's face. It was his "professional" expression, the one that he used when he wanted to mask his true feelings. However, Claire didn't need to look at his face to know how he was feeling. She could feel that he was almost vibrating with nerves and tension as they waited in the corridor.

She didn't need prompting to take his hand as his fingers sought hers, and Claire squeezed back. This meeting could be huge. They had talked about sharing quarters, and how they would go about it, and the only thing that had come to mind as the sensible option was to go and see Weir before they left, get everything set in stone so that they wouldn't have to have the conversation after their arrival.

She and Caleb owed it to Dr Weir - and to one another - to be upfront about their relationship, although Claire had no doubt that the woman would already know at least a little.

"Well, here goes nothing," murmured Claire, just as Caleb knocked briskly on the door. She had been assured by Carson that Weir was spending the day in her office, sorting out the last paperwork for the expedition, and she frowned a little as there was no answer.

"Maybe we should..." She was about to suggest that they knocked again, just in case Weir hadn't heard them, or was on the phone or something, when Caleb reached out and just opened the door. Hastily, she let go of his hand, even though she wanted nothing more than to squeeze it even harder, just for a little comfort. This was almost like being summoned to the headmaster's office at school all over again, something which Claire had no desire at all to repeat.

She followed Caleb in, closing the door quietly behind her, and Claire found herself mildly amused that Caleb was stood to attention in front of the other woman's desk. "Hey Dr Weir," began Claire, her throat dry. She coughed lightly. "Do you have a few minutes?"

Elizabeth’s head shot up from its slump over the file in front of her as the deep voice broke the silence that had otherwise set in as she worked. Once she had gotten engrossed in the task at hand, even the occasional foot falls, and muted conversations of those passing on the other side of the door had gone unnoticed.

Offering a smile to the persons who had entered, Elizabeth felt it broaden as she realised that Williams was standing to attention as though he was ready to pop a salute at any moment. Years of working with military personnel, and it still amused her when it was directed at her. She’d really never thought herself to be the sort of person that got saluted, but with her heading an expedition with a heavy military contingent, it was inevitable that those habits would carry on.

“Hey Dr Te Atua, Williams – Please come in, find a seat – I have all the time for anyone willing to distract me from this paperwork” Gesturing to the seat opposite her desk, Elizabeth stood up to retrieve the chair she had stashed to one side behind her, moving the few files that had taken up residence onto the floor.

Moving the chair so that it sat next to its partner, Elizabeth settled back down into her own seat, and closed the file she was working on, as to give her two unexpected visitors her undivided attention.

“How are you both?"

There was one thing to be said for civilian leaders, and although Caleb hadn't quite offered Weir a salute it was right there if she wanted one. There was nothing but respect in his stance, he knew a few military personnel didn't always get along with non-military leaders, but Caleb didn't care either way. So long as they made the call, got the job done, then they'd have his respect each and every time.

He took the seat that Weir pulled over, leaving the one already there for Claire to take, this was going to be an odd conversation to be having without him actually acting nice and pulling out the chair for Claire. Beside he wasn't sure she would appreciate the gesture all that much in that moment, they were trying to show that nothing was going to inter fear with work when they asked there question.

Caleb shifted in his own seat slightly, he was still as straight backed as he had been when he'd entered, he looked subtly from Claire to Weir, wondering for a moment if he should play the pleasantries or just go straight to the point, he wasn't always known for getting straight to the point, but he also wasn't that good at talking around a subject as well either.

“I'm good, ma'am,” he started, “We're good,” he amended a second later. He might not want to shout the relationship from every corridor going, but he knew this was one time he had to show that relationship in public to someone that was higher up than him.

“We came to ask, well with Atlantis right round the corner,” he said, seeming talking himself in circles, he looked at Claire hoping she would jump in at any moment and just ask what seemed to be stuck in his throat.

This was going to be a difficult meeting, that was for sure, and Claire hesitated before taking the proffered seat. She smiled, ever so slightly, as Caleb seemed to struggle, if just for a moment, as to whether or not he ought to pull out her chair for her. In a way, much as she would have appreciated it, she was glad that he didn't. They needed to put on a professional front at the moment if they were to have any hope of proving to Elizabeth Weir that their relationship wouldn't impact their work in Atlantis.

However, Claire glanced across at Caleb as they took their seats, before turning back to Weir. The woman looked harassed, and she wasn't surprised. After all, she had to organise the shifting - likely permanent - of two hundred people to a whole other galaxy. It wasn't as simple as moving a family to another city. Claire was finding it hard enough getting the medical supplies organised, much less overseeing the move of the entire colony. The woman was doing an impressive job.

Claire blinked as Weir asked how they were, and Caleb answered for the both of them, clearly indicating that they were there together. It was probably the first time that he had referred to them as a couple to one of their superiors, with the exception of Carson. A small, slow smile touched her lips, and the faintest of blushes came to her cheeks. It was a good feeling, officially going public.

Again, Caleb took her by surprise by taking the bull by the horns and doing away with pleasantries, instead preferring to jump right in. Claire couldn't help a soft laugh when he ran out of steam and looked to her for help. It was all she could do not to reach out and take his hand for a little comfort for both of them. She'd never thought she'd see the day when she'd have to be asking for permission to live with her partner!

"I think what Caleb is trying to say is... we're here to ask permission to share quarters once we get to Atlantis." She paused for a few seconds, glancing first to Caleb, then back to Weir. "We're in a committed relationship, we live together now, so..." Claire trailed off and shrugged. "We thought it would be best to come and see you now, rather than waiting until we got there."

There was a tension in the room which was apparent to even the most oblivious of people, and Elizabeth, well versed in non-verbal signals, and the subtleties within, simply sat in her chair and fixed a relaxed gaze upon her guests. Her own body language was relaxed and open, a habit she almost always subconsciously gravitated towards, a habit that a friend had once remarked, made Elizabeth a natural people person, as she exuded a quiet confidence and general ease in almost every circumstance.

Shifting her gaze between the pair in front of her, Elizabeth waited patiently for one of them to speak, and when it was Williams who broke the peace first, she directed her attention to him, before following his line of sight back to the Doctor.

Who aired the reason for the visit, and made the palpable tension in the room just a little more understandable. It was something that she hadn’t even considered a potential issue until after they had reached Atlantis. After all it would be poor foresight to imagine that taking 200 people to a brand new galaxy, potentially forever, would not result in couples forming. She'd also seen the medical provisions lists, and a not unsizable portion of that had been contraception related.

“Thank you for your consideration – I understand that this is a very personal thing to share, and I like that you felt comfortable enough to bring it to me” She paused for a moment to gather her thoughts so that she could avoid flinging questions at the couple before her.

“Do you mind if I ask how long the two of you have been involved?” Her tone light, Elizabeth posed the first of a few questions that she thought appropriate. She didn’t want to come across as against the proposal, but she was also keenly aware that a potential break up if the shine came of the rose, could cause potential issues that she’d like to avoid.

Caleb honestly couldn't actually put it any better than that, well he could most definitely have put it worse if he had tried to tell Weir what they wanted to do. This was one more thing that was kind of out of his comfort zone, he had never actually asked permission to move in with someone before, he literally just did it. He could imagine that this was how normal people were meant to feel when asking for living quarters together, that they'd feel as odd about it as he currently was, not that he knew many other couples going to Atlantis. In fact he was sure that – as far as his own knowledge went – no one but him and Claire had coupled up.

He nodded his head as Weir thanked them for actually taking the time to ask her for this arrangement, he would not however say that he felt comfortable in doing so of course. Then came the question that he hadn't really wanted her to ask – he had hoped she wouldn't ask it – there was no denying that there relationship had done a one eighty in a matter of a month.

Knew that despite the teasing he got from just being with Claire in that one month, there was still the other reputation that seemed to be clinging on as tightly as it could. Hell he still sometimes got ask when he was planning on moving on to new ground.

He looked at Claire for a split second before looking back to Weir, he had to resist the urge to take Claire's hand in this situation, he was hoping he might be able to skirt the answer entirely. Not lie about it, just not answer it if he could, but part of him knew that wasn't the best way to go about it.

Sighing he said, “Ma'am we have known each other since I joined the SGC, which was well over a year ago now. We've been close friends since that day,” he could still remember that first meeting with Claire, he had been so surprised that she had given back his flirting just as much as he had flirted with her. Plus he might still have a small scar where she had stitched him up as well, “It turned into something more about a month ago now?” he asked, looking at Claire. Honestly it had felt like they'd been together so much longer than that, he just hoped that he got that right.

Claire was tense, and sat bolt upright in the chair next to Caleb, not quite sure which way things were going to go. It was probably a huge ask of Elizabeth Weir, especially before the expedition had even begun. She was acutely aware that Caleb was every bit as nervous as she was herself, and she turned to him for a moment, flashing him the most confident smile she could muster. It wasn’t all that confident.

She listened, nodding, as Weir thanked them for coming to her with their question, and Claire smiled as Weir said she appreciated that they felt comfortable enough to approach her. “The last thing we want to do is to go behind your back,” she explained, keeping her gaze direct. “There’s enough rumours about us going around the city, so we figured you’d probably heard at least a few of them already. We owe it to you –and to ourselves – to be upfront about things.” With Atlantis being a civilian-run expedition, and the very real likelihood that it was a one way trip, Claire would be surprised if the possibility of couples – and even families – springing up hadn’t been taken into account.

She’d bet that Weir hadn’t expected this kind of request already, though.

It was all she could do not to reach over and take Caleb’s hand as he explained – not without hesitation – the relatively short time they had been romantically involved. However, she shot him a grateful smile as he detailed their friendship beforehand, in the hope that it might make a difference.

Claire waited for a few seconds after Caleb had finished before taking a steadying breath of her own. “Look, I know we’ve only been together a matter of... six, eight weeks or so, and it’s short, yeah, bloody short. But... this move is going to be an upheaval for everyone, couples, singles, the lot. It’s going to be a test of everyone involved, and... well, Caleb and I are committed to one another. We’ve been close friends – best friends, really – literally since Caleb and I started here, and it naturally developed into something more.” She paused for a few seconds, looking across at Caleb with a soft smile, before turning back to Weir.

“Look, this could all turn to custard, but... we’re close enough as friends for things to work, even if we did break up.”

Weir sat quietly as answers came back at her from both parties, it was evident that Williams was less comfortable with this whole scenario than the Doctor, and Elizabeth could understand why. She’d been advised that he was a bit of a ladies man, known for his bed hopping, and evidently this was new territory for him. It was evident by the sigh before he started his response, that he was also concerned that her line of questioning seemed to be travelling.

The Doc, on the other hand, seemed a little more prepared for the questions, she probably had thought they’d end up having to answer if the time came, and Elizabeth nodded along as the affirmations of their respect, and solidity of relationship were made.

“Okay – I do agree that this relationship is fairly new, but I also take on board that you have known each other for a longer period of time. I also respect both of you in terms of your professionalism, but I hope you can understand why I might worry about potential issues”
She paused, giving a moment for her words to settle in, and then considered her next question, and the best angle of approach

“I assume given the brevity of your relationship, it’s not common knowledge? There are just over 200 people travelling with us in a fortnight, and as it’s very likely a one way trip, our expedition I hope will become a family, or at least a working community – I assume your both ok with the likely hood that your relationship would be widely known?”

The unspoken part of her sentence was that it would also be widely known if everything “went to custard” as Claire had so eloquently put. She didn’t want them to try and keep it secret, after all that was unfair to insist that everything be clandestine, she just needed to be sure that they were both aware that gossip, and events, whatever they may be, would likely travel faster in a small group.
