1st October 2014, 15:20 - the Gateroom

After the hubbub had died down, the gateroom had cleared relatively quickly. There was a higher security presence than normal, and anyone going in and out was having their credentials checked. The technicians were on standby and ready to dial Tollana. In just ten minutes, the medical team was scheduled to leave. On the ramp, a MALP was primed to go first, in order to get the lay of the land.

Hammond waited in the control room, anxious and tense at sending a team into a potentially deadly situation with minimal intelligence.

The quiet of the Gateroom, now that the majority of people had left was unnerving, it was that calm few moments before the storm and although some people would say it was peaceful, to Caleb it made things seem more strained. It was like an anxious tick just underneath his skin and the tiny childish part of his mind wanted to tell everyone to hurry up, dial the gate, so they could be getting on with the job. But he didn't, he stood, he waited and kept his thoughts to himself, they weren't going to help anyone at the moment.

Caleb knew it wouldn't be long before the medical staff came back, the Stargate was dialled up and they were on their way, he had helped as much as possible earlier with getting things set up. Had taken a step back as the actual tech guys sorted out the MALP that was to go through first, after all they wanted a working one going through, not a defunct one.

He just kind of wanted to be doing something now, and it took all considerable effort to not pace around the room. The hardest part of any off world mission that Caleb had found was the waiting to go, once he was wherever he was going he was fine, he could work and get on with his job. But this, this few minutes waiting before everything kicked off it was the hardest thing...

It had been a very tight turnaround. It had been a while since Claire had had to stock up for a field operating theatre, and it took her a few minutes to make decisions on what was needed, and what wasn't. Ten sets of surgical tools, a whole crate of various dressings, needles, a portable steriliser in case ten sets of instruments wasn't enough.

Gloves, face masks, field anaesthesia... the list went on. Fortunately, Claire was able to enlist Fraiser's help and advice, and was fairly confident that she was as well prepared as she could be. She had a couple of minutes to change into her green BDUs, strap on a vest and her sidearm, before she was due back at the gateroom.

Apologising to the Marines whom Taft had asked to help her - with all her equipment, they had three crates and two large backpacks to carry between the four of them - Claire hefted the heavier of the backpacks and started to lead the way. With the time it had taken to gather supplies, she had expected to be the last to arrive, but was surprised - and not unpleasantly - to find that it was only Caleb present from the team that had been named.

"Over by the ramp, please," Claire said, pointing the Marines in the direction of the ramp. She dropped her own backpack down, rolling her shoulders to relieve them from the weight she had carried, before moving to stand with Caleb. Not too close, the gossip was already swirling around, after all, but close enough to be able to talk to him, albeit briefly, without being overheard.

"Hey you," she said, a small, soft smile in place as she glanced up at Caleb, pulling her hair back into a functional ponytail. "How are you?" There weren't the words, at least not in public, to say everything she wanted to say: stay safe, be careful, come home to me.

Tahirah had followed Taft into the prep room, after a little searching she found a spare utility vest. The pockets had already been emptied by the previous wearer and would provide plenty of extra room for medical supplies. Leaning her staff weapon against the wall, she slid the black nylon over her tank top and buckled is securely. A quick pat of the cargo pockets on her pants proved they were just as ready to be filled.

Arming herself again, she strode back into the gate room to find the doctor had returned. Piled next to the ramp were several crates and two back packs. Testing them both, she choose the heavier of the two and smiled sweetly at one of the marines until he offered to help clip it to the back of her vest. One last check that her weapons were in order and she had spare powercels, and Tahirah was ready for to ship out.

Making her way over to her team-mates Tahirah stood a little to the side and just listened. She was sure Caleb had some sort of relation with the doctor, after all she was a pretty young woman. By listening Tahirah was hoping to figure if he had made his opening gambit yet and how it was received.

Caleb couldn't help but smile when Claire returned with, well with what he could only describe as the infirmary but condensed down. He moved out of the way as a couple of crates were placed at the bottom of the ramp, he nodded as the Marines that had been helping then went on to moving other things either out of the way or into the way. Depending on what stuff it was.

"Hey," he replied, offering her a smile that this time reached his eyes. Holding himself stiffly, he wanted nothing more than to reach out, maybe touch her arm, offer some form of comfort and although they weren't exactly breaking any rules it could still be frowned upon when about to depart on a mission.

"Ready to get going," Caleb answered to her question, it wasn't a lie he was anxious to get going. This waiting around although necessary, he didn't like it. It also wasn't what he wanted to say to her, he wanted to reassure Claire. Tell her that everything would be okay, it was going to work out just fine and that when they stepped through the Stargate to Tollana it was going to be easy. But well unfortunately Caleb hadn't been blessed with being able to tell the future, so he was out of luck on saying such things to her.

He saw Tahirah return, and offered her a small nod of his head and a smaller smile. He had a lot of respect for the Jaffa and although he knew her, he hadn't actually had the pleasure of working with her. So it was going to be interesting. They all just had to wait for the others to rejoin them now, then maybe the anxious feeling in his stomach would disappear.

"Quit making eyes at the doctor, Williams." Taft said it without even looking up as he entered the Gate Room, displaying the supernatural power that was bestowed the moment one was promoted to the rank of Sgt Major. The ability to know what everybody else was doing wrong. Taft had stuffed his pockets with med-kits, the type Mere would use as a battlefield medic, and took up the remaining pack that Claire had brought down. Secured, tightened, and bounce tested. Good. He racked a round into the chamber of his combat shotgun. "Check and safe the doctor's side arm instead. No offense Doc."

"As soon as we get the all clear we'll kick the crates through and follow. Doc, you're the package. Stay in the middle of the formation and we'll get you to your patients as quickly as humanly possible. After that, the doctor and the medic get to work while the rest of us make a perimeter and do our best to keep things calm. Any questions... other than where is our medic?" He looked around, she wasn't specifically late but she was later than him so it begged the question.

Caleb's stance couldn't have been more official, more professional, but the smile at least reached his eyes, and Claire gave him another flicker of a tiny smile herself. Her eyes, though, were more serious than Caleb was likely to have seen them in the past, a seriousness that showed that Claire was completely in work mode, preparing to put children back together as best she could.

That was the dark side to what she did.

She inclined her head towards Tahirah, surprisingly not caring that she was on a team with Caleb's former conquest. She was confident that he wouldn't cheat on her, and that was all she could ask. Why should she care who was in his past, so long as they weren't looking for a repeat performance?

Claire bit back on any number of innuendo laden, flirty comments to Caleb admitting that he was ready to get going. Had this not been such a high-pressure situation, maybe she would have slipped into their normal banter, but no, not today. Today, there was a lot at stake, probably more - for Claire at least - since the day she had joined the SGC. "Kia kaha, e taku tahu*," she murmured, as softly as she could, not knowing whether Caleb would hear it, much less understand it.

She didn't get the chance to say more. Taft made his typical entrance, and Claire felt a blush staining her cheeks. He'd heard the rumours too, then. She didn't step away, didn't take another covert glance at Caleb either, just gave an eye roll as Taft ordered Caleb to check her sidearm. "Sarge, I'm assuming you're forgetting you passed me on my last firearms course, then," she said, a vague hint of a joke in her voice - well, as much as she could muster. Her mind was trying to cover as many scenarios as possible.

"The package??" Claire almost laughed, it sounded so ridiculous. "Okay, I get it, the middle." It made sense, at least.

If Tahirah had any doubt at all about there being a relationship between her two teamates, the doctors blush said it all. And if Caleb's very serious demeanor were anything to go by, things were still in the blooming stage. Tahirah's face split into a grin, and she forced herself not to laugh delightedly. The doctor proving to be quite the personality. Sure enough of herself to make a wry retort back to Taft. That in itself showed courage, or foolhardiness. Right then Tahirah decided she would watch over this girl, if only because it was going to make the mission so much more interesting.

Tahirah positioned herself next to the crates, ready to haul one up the ramp as soon as the chappa'ia was stable.

Caleb resisted the urge to make a remark to the Sergeant Majors comment, well at least he wasn't going to have to go through the whole mission pretending he didn't know Claire intimately. Although there wasn't going to be any hand holding as they stepped through the Stargate and it was going to be professional all the way, but still.

“Of course, sir,” he said, offering Claire a smile as he stepped up to her and did exactly as the Sergeant had said. He checked the side arm over, made sure everything was correctly in place, safety catch firmly on, before tucking it back into its holster and if his hand lingered a second longer than it should have done. Well that was just the Sergeants fault for making him check the weapon, that he knew Claire would have checked and double checked herself.

He stepped away from the good doctor, offering a smile in apology, he wouldn't have checked the weapon without that order. Most of the people on base that had the firearms test given to them were competent and knew what they were doing in the end.

Caleb listened to the Sergeants orders, right they were going to be essentially a protective barrier around the medics as they worked. It made him wonder just what kind of injuries they were about to see, he wasn't a squeamish person he could handle his fair of broken bones, cuts, bruises, hell there had even been one time he'd seen a whole appear in someone. But what he didn't like about all that, was if people were pleading for help and no help could be given, it was that, that chilled him to his core.

"Like I said, doc, nothing personal. I'm just going with experience. Williams is cleared to do basic first aid on himself, but I'd have you double check every Hello Kitty themed adhesive bandage after him." Taft took up a position in the center of the ramp, his back to the still empty gate and checked his watch. There was still a couple of minutes grace while they waited for their last team member and the dial up.
