"Incoming wormhole!"

For the second time that day, the call went up from the gate technician on duty, and he frowned. One unexpected inbound dial was bad enough, but a second was positively concerning. All the readings seemed fine, though, and nothing looked out of the ordinary on any of the monitors. The first chevron locked, and the inner ring started to move around...

Then stopped.

The first chevron glowed brightly, the familiar red/orange promising that a new arrival was imminent, but, other than that? Nothing.

The tech rechecked the monitors, and, again, nothing was out of the ordinary. It was as though something had interrupted the dialling sequence, and was preventing any further action from whoever was trying to come through to the SGC. Frowning, he picked up the phone handset next to him, tapped in a number, and waited. He didn't have to wait long.

"Major Davies, we have a..." He didn't want to say problem, or situation, because it might be neither. "...a potential SNAFU on our hands." Anyone in the control room would have heard Davies barking down the line. "No sir, not exactly. It was another unscheduled offworld activation, but... the gate... well, it's stuck, sir. Just the one chevron lit, and nothing else happening." Even the inner ring had stopped moving now.

"No, sir, all readings are normal, and the only reports of problems we've had from anywhere in the base this morning was some lights flickering a couple of hours ago. It looked like a faulty relay switch. It's been reset, and nothing else has happened." A pause, and the technician nodded. "Yes, sir."

Putting the phone down, one hand whizzed over the keyboard as he tapped in the sequence to close down an aborted dial. Part of him was expecting nothing to happen, for a glitch in the system to prevent the shutdown, but... it didn't. The lights in the chevron dulled, the ring ground to a stop, and, as everything had all the way through that morning, everything looked just the way it should.

He had his orders, though. Davies would report to the General, and, if there was just one more unusual occurrence, the base would go onto high alert while thorough investigations were held.

Just another boring day at the SGC.
