Has been at the SGC for about 18 months, using her skills as a linguist to help with translations of new languages. Has been offworld a number of times.

Section 3: General Information

A. Personal History

Born to David and Sarah Parsons in Baltimore, Maryland, Ruth was the third of four children for the police detective and his teacher wife, and their only daughter. Ever a tomboy, Ruth grew up trying to keep up with her brothers, and, occasionally, besting them, at least physically. She was only eight when her talent for languages really started to display itself, when she wrote her own alphabet and language within a few weeks, to the extent where, had she bothered teaching it to someone else, a perfectly rational conversation would have been uterly possible.

It was a no-brainer that she would go on to study languages, and the only choice facing her was whether or not to focus on a single language, or to look at what she actually loved above all else: how languages were created and structured, and what similarities tied even the most diverse of tongues together.

She won a place to study Classics at Johns Hopkins, with a minor in linguistics. However, she used the study of the Classics more to bolster her linguistics than the other way around. By the time she left Johns Hopkins at the age of 28, Ruth was fluent in a total of five languages, as well as English, with the non-Classics being purely down to her own study. She also dabbled in Arabic, Japanese and Mandarin, but only enough to satisfy her curiosity.

Upon completion of her studies, Ruth was offered a position at Johns Hopkins lecturing in linguistics, a job which she adored. However, in her spare time, she worked on research papers developing her doctoral thesis, based on commonalities between world mythologies, and the underpinning linguistic similarities between key fables and legends.

She gave a small lecture tour in late 2012, and it was on this lecture tour that she came to the attention of the SGC, where her mastery of Latin, Ancient Greek and hieroglyphics set her apart from many of her contemporaries. She was approached by the SGC a month or so later, and they made her an offer that, as a linguist, she would have had to have been nuts to pass up. She has now been with the SGC for almost three years, and has been a semi-regular offworld team members, with her expertise almost right up there with Daniel Jackson, when it came to developing understanding of Ancient and Goa'uld.

B. General Personality

Ruth is a sweetie, really. Never without a smile on her face, she likes to see the best in people. She gets easily excited, and when passionate about something or someone, wears her heart on her sleeve. This means that she can sometimes get upset or hurt without the other person really thinking that they would have done much to cause offence. Quick to laugh and slow to anger, she seems never to have a bad word to say about anyone, and would much rather be your friend than your enemy.

Her bubbly persona, though, hides a sharp intellect, and once she latches onto an idea or concept, she's like a dog with a bone. Tenacious and persistent, Ruth will go at a problem with everything she has, devoting all her energies to resolving it as soon as possible. She can be seen a somewhat stand-offish due to this, she will always make an effort to try to dispel what she sees as a flawed opinion of her. Of course, it never enters her head that some people might see her as unnaturally perky and a little too nice.

However, she hates being offside with anyone, and will always go out of her way to try to talk any problems through, never wanting to part on bad terms with those she classes as friends. She even goes out of her way to remain friends with her ex boyfriends, even classing her ex husband as a close friend. After all, they started off as friends... why let a failed marriage get in the way of a good friendship?

i. Character Strengths:
  • Loyal
  • Tenacious
  • Persistent
  • Resilient
  • Optimistic

ii. Character Weaknesses:
  • Stubborn
  • Sometimes too inquisitive
  • Wears her heart on her sleeve
  • Can be overly focused on the small stuff sometimes, missing the bigger picture
  • Sometimes, tries to see the good in people a little too much

iii. Personal attitude and demeanour:

Some people might call Ruth dippy, or ditsy, or just plain out there. However, those people don't really know her that well. She's just an eternal, bubbly optimist who is never happier than when she's poking around in the minutiae of a new language, and who would like to make friends rather than enemies. Unashamedly enthusiastic about those topics which spark her interest, she sometimes lets that enthusiasm run away with her, which can often leave others standing there slackjawed while she continues talking.

However, Ruth is highly intelligent, and a natural linguist, with fluency in five languages, as well as English, under her belt, and her knowledge and understanding of Ancient and Goa'uld is ever growing, making her much sought after at the SGC. Surprisingly humble for one with her skills, Ruth just sees her abilities as something as natural as breathing, and, as such, tends to brush them aside without really considering how important her role might be in whatever project she has been assigned to.

C. Additional Information

Ruth knew Jake Patterson at Johns Hopkins, and they are rekindling their friendship now they are at the SGC together.

Ancient gene: Yes, but control untested.

RP Sample (in character):

Ruth couldn't help it. She bounced up and down on the balls of her feet, squealing with delight, a broad grin on her face. She couldn't care less who saw her: after all, it wasn't every day that you managed to crack a problematic section of text in an obscure dialect of Goa'uld. Of course, the fact that they were offworld at the time made her little victory celebration all the more ridiculous, but... who cared?

Some of the military grunts cared, from the looks of it, that's who. The grin growing ever more broad, she poked her tongue out at them. "I promise I won't judge when you guys get a hard-on when you bag your next Jaffa," she snorted.

Truly, though, everyone had their way of celebrating a breakthrough or a success, and it just so happened that hers were more vocal than most, and certainly garnered more than a few smiles. However, just as suddenly as the gleeful display began, it ended, and a serious expression slipped back into place on Ruth's face. Sure, she had translated the passage, but, in the excitement at actually completing the translation had more or less completely overlooked what it actually said.

"Uuuuh, Dr Rothman," she called out, her voice now taking on a deliberately nervous note. "Apparently, 'Ra was here, and he's gonna kick our mikta'," said Ruth, the grin returning to her lips. "Damn, I wish I'd had a fifty on that translation in the sweepstake..."
