Apparently something had caught their archaeologist’s eye judging by the fact he had split from the group and gone for a wander towards one of the other structures, which wasn’t overly helpful when he was sort of needed here and now for insightful musings and explanations.
Quirking an eye brow as Thomas just reiterated the same information as they’d had in their brief, Sophie kept her mouth shut, not wanting to mention that she knew that much.

Still their commander in chief seemed to have other avenues to gather the information, and Sophie moved away from the group a foot or so to take in the surroundings. She could still hear all that was being discussed and was within easy grabbing if they needed her, she just felt an uncertainty in her stomach, something other than the unease of being off world, an almost instinctual deep set fear which she was starting to attribute to the stillness of the alien environment.

Their consulting newcomer seemed to be a font of useful information, and Sophie turned her full attentions back to Price as he spoke, liking that he didn’t try and sound all smart about what he was spewing, which was nice. Sophie had met too many academics who somehow made the delivery of facts sound like an act of pretentious cock waggling.

He looked almost chagrined as he finished his spiel, and Sophie offered a small but warm smile as she acknowledged his contribution. “Alligator carvings, and find the biggest building, sounds easy enough” Her smile didn’t last long though, the lack of something, anything was making her edgy, like she’d had too much coffee, not enough sleep and was trying to count platelets on a slide.

The lack of background noise remained utterly constant, the stillness, indeed, feeling unnatural. There wasn't even a breath of wind to move the trees, and it almost felt as though their entire surroundings were inside a bubble of sorts. The ziggurat structures towered over them, seven partial structures, with doors leading into the bowels of the buildings, a tall tower which looked intact, but rickety, and, perhaps a half mile away, just about visible among the dense trees, the top of a complete ziggurat could be seen.

Other than that... nothing.

Until the gate burst into life, that is. A radio transmission crackled in the team's ears. "Namkung to report back to the SGC immediately for a family emergency." The gate died, and, just as quickly as the message had come through, Namkung raced back to the gate, dialled out, and left the planet.

((OOC: Jess has decided not to play any more, so please carry on without Namkung.))

Before Ryan and Kendall could converse any more about the general creepiness of their surroundings, the gate’s roar cut through the silence of the area and sent Nathan’s adrenaline pumping. The colonel ordered them almost immediately to take cover, and by the time the vortex shot outwards, Kendall had his M4 trained directly on the even horizon. Whatever this was, he didn’t need it today.

Thankfully, there was nothing so problematic as a Jaffa assault, or god help them, Replicators swarming out of the gate. Instead it was just a brief transmission ordering Namkung back home for some family emergency. Nathan couldn’t even imagine what it was, but for her to be instantly recalled, something serious must have been going on. He sighed as the Korean woman dialed up the gate to Earth and left for home, both from his own natural worry about what could have happened with her loved ones, and the fact that they were now down a team member.

After that little interruption, however, it was back to business as usual. Nathan’s gaze turned from the Stargate back towards their options for where to head off to. A big-arse tower, a whole bunch of ziggaruts all around them, and an even bigger ziggarut off in the distance. Plenty of places to poke around, get lost, and re-enact their least favorite horror movies. Wonderful.

Might as well try to figure out where to hone in on first, especially since a pair of archeologists admiring the scenery was just asking to have things get off track. ”So tell me, Doctors,” Nathan said as he caught back up to their eggheads, ”Where did Mayans typically keep their prisoners?” That seemed like a good a place as any to start searching for this Tok’Ra’s whereabouts.

James watched the events with Sun-hi and the gate, and when the blue pool disappeared, they were down one soldier.

Nathan Kendall wrote:
”So tell me, Doctors,” Nathan said as he caught back up to their eggheads, ”Where did Mayans typically keep their prisoners?”

James looked at Kendall, "Well, they didn't really. Most prisoners were sacrificed to appease the gods... Typically by decapitation in a ceremony. But, theoretically speakin', if they were bein' kept, it would be at the main stepped pyramid until the ceremony could begin." He shrugged and pointed at the distant complete pyramid. "Might be that one, considerin' that it's the only complete one... But I'm not sure. Not sure about the function of that tower, either."

The sound of the Gate roaring into life was too much in the silent stillness and Sophie jumped, letting a small sound of surprise escape as she twisted round to face the previously empty stone ring.

The ear piece she wore burst into transmission, and she watched the silent soldier race back from where she left Jackson, looking lost in his musings and unbothered about the sudden Gate use, and disappeared taking the blue pool along with her.
Running her hand through her hair, she closed her eyes and concentrated on slowing her now racing heart which seemed to pound in her ears like a freight train.

Jumpy – Very jumpy!

Inching a little closer to the others, Sophie listened to the conversation, and tried to resume a professional interest instead of slack jawed gazing at the creepy, yet picturesque scenery.
There seemed to be a whole lot of ‘maybes’ and ‘not sures’ which was doing nothing for her morale.

“Well so far I’ve heard two reasons why the big building yonder is looking likely. Couldn’t hurt to take a look, see if we can find some of those alligator markings you were talking about”

"Well, they didn't really. Most prisoners were sacrificed to appease the gods... Typically by decapitation in a ceremony.”

Nathan managed not to vocalize the ‘Oh, bugger’ running through his head at that thought.

“But, theoretically speakin', if they were bein' kept, it would be at the main stepped pyramid until the ceremony could begin. Might be that one, considerin' that it's the only complete one... But I'm not sure. Not sure about the function of that tower, either."

Rubbing his chin, Nathan nodded along with that notably less gory conjecture. Human thinking was that you didn’t keep your major prisoners near civilization, but Goa’uld thinking was entirely different. Hell, they probably kept the worst offenders in the main pyramids just to be able to have some fun and games torturing the poor sods at any time.

Edwards popped in with her own comments supporting the idea. “Well so far I’ve heard two reasons why the big building yonder is looking likely. Couldn’t hurt to take a look, see if we can find some of those alligator markings you were talking about.”

Nathan glanced over at Ryan, and his CO nodded along with the prospect. Alright then, they were in some level of agreement. ”Big pyramid it is,” he concluded with a slight nod towards the large structure. ”Let’s get a move on, then. Keep your head down, don’t stop to sightsee, you know the drill.” The RAF officer went ahead and took the lead, moving towards the front of the group as they started their travel over to investigate what was inside Spooky Old Goa’uld Structure Number One.

James nodded at the group as the decision was made to head to the biggest structure. He hoped he wasn't leading them all astray. This was his first mission, after all.

He fell into the group heading toward the pyramid, still uncomfortable being in a silent jungle.

Well what did you know, suggestion made, acknowledged and actioned. This was a red letter day in her book, since coming to the SGC, Sophie’s interactions with the military crowd had pretty much been slim to none, or in one memorable instance, a conversation that contained the phrase ‘don’t worry your pretty head, we’ll protect you’ . She’d been given a lesson in how NOT to respond to an officer after that one.

Following their lead officer, Sophie tried to stick to the orders not to sightsee, the place was so breath taking she couldn’t help but slow her pace once or twice to take in a fascia, or second glance a small carving. She was careful not to stray from the group, and even her longest dawdle was rectified by taking a couple extra steps to get back into her space toward the middle of the group.

The eeriness of the place was still a little grating, but it was hard to focus on it when you were distracted by the sights, that were until Sophie glanced forward to track their progress and saw the larger pyramid looming up ahead of them, its very presence seeming oppressive.

“Anyone else getting the heeby jeebies, or is it just me” She asked, her light hearted tone undercut somewhat by the nervous laugh that completed her question.
