September 27th 11.45am 2014

Record time hadn't been that much of a record time, for one he ha been left speechless at what Claire had said, young and virile, honestly he wasn't that old, not yet. He still had plenty of years left in him yet, and well he didn't even have any grey hairs yet. He had watched her walk away, partly to enjoy the view and partly because she had said that to him, before following into the base. There was a raised eyebrow as he went through a security check point, yeah it was obvious the guy had watched him pull up and just exactly who had gotten out of his car, there goes another rumour floating around the base.

He just offered the person a smile, and went down to his quarters to shower and change. He pulled on clean clothes, all necessary security passes, dog tags resting on the blue t-shirt and green jacket pulled on. That left him with about an hour and half to kill in the mess hall with Claire and anyone else that ended up being there. It was going to be a test of character for him, he knew that although he wasn't going to be able to be all over Claire like he had been, he wasn't going to hide it from anyone either. They weren't breaking any rules anyway.

Reaching the Mess hall, Caleb made his way inside, he spotted Claire at one of the tables already, the place was already quite busy people lining up to grab what was left of the breakfast foods and others refilling at least two cups of coffee at a time. He made his way over to Claire, smiled at her and sat himself down facing her, no temptation to sit next to her, this way he could keep his hands to himself.

“Record time or am I late again?” he asked, taking a sip of the steaming mug in front of her.

"Hey! Yours is there!"

Claire laughed as Caleb took a cheeky slurp of her coffee as he took a seat opposite her. Very prudent, really. She wasn't sure she could resist getting a bit "hands on" if he were sat next to her. Claire had more or less run to the mess hall, knowing that it took her a few minutes more than it took Caleb to get to his quarters. Breakfast was over, and what remnants there were looked hard and crusty. Definitely not something to set you up for the day, especially when you hadn't eaten for 24 hours.

Instead, she had scooped up two plates of what looked like chicken, mashed potato and various vegetables, in that peculiar creamy stuff the Americans called "gravy". It smelled okay. Adding two large coffees to the tray, along with two bowls of what may or may not have been rice pudding, just for good measure, Claire managed to find a table in a corner - a table for six - that was empty.

She waited a few minutes, idly sipping coffee, before Caleb arrived. She grinned after he put her mug down. "Hey, Mr Young and Virile, that seat's taken by my bloke," she chuckled, her eyes fiery and her expression mischievous. Claire squinted for effect. "Oh, it really is you," she said, with the utmost innocence, before scooping up a forkful of potatoes and eating it with studied slowness. The smile dialled back a little, replaced with one of infinite sincerity and warmth. "Thank you for last night," she said softly. "I'm glad you came to find me."

It was a really good job that Caleb didn't have his mouth full at that moment in time, as Claire once again managed to make him speechless for a moment. Before smiling, well two could play at that game, he sat up a little straighter, pretending that her words had boosted his ego, "Young an Virile, how did you guess my Friday night name?" he asked, winking at her in a really over the top manner.

This, this was what he liked about sharing his free time with Claire, that banter, the laughter, the jokes, it was so much fun. No matter how bad a day he had, had there was always a smile waiting to appear once he'd spoken to Claire. Also there was a nice little warming sensation happening in his chest when Claire said he was her bloke.

Tucking into his own plate of food, some of it even tasted like chicken - of course most things in the Mess Hall did taste like chicken - it was good. After the workout the previous night and that morning, the food was greatly appreciated and he hadn't realised quite how hungry he had been, not until that first forkful hit his tongue.

Hearing the sincerity in Claire's voice, Caleb slowed his eating off, studying her for a moment, he knew he had messed up in not going to her sooner and he still was kicking himself for that repeatedly. The food didn't taste as good any more, as he thought about the hurt he must of caused, Caleb was loyal down to a fault sometimes people had said it was a weakness, he was too loyal. Didn't like to upset anyone, that was why he had such a 'cheery' disposition at times, so knowing he had accidentally on purpose hurt Claire one of his closest and oldest - at least at the SGC - friends was just pulling at him slightly.

"I'm just sorry it took so long for me to come and find you," he said, voice lowered slightly. "You also don't need to thank me for last night, as I recall it was kind of a joint effort in a lot of things." It might have come across as more flirting to anyone who was listening, but it wasn't, it was as sincere as he got. He didn't want thanks for making them both feel good that night, he just wanted to know that it wasn't a mistake and he had an opportunity to do it again.

"And Saturday, Sunday, Monday, perhaps," giggled Claire. "You certainly lived up to it last night." Claire's eyes sparkled with mirth, with excitement and anticipation. After things had ended with Tama, she hadn't imagined that she would ever feel this way about anyone, and so she had been utterly blindsided by developments with Caleb. They had been so close for a year now, how she had missed these feelings creeping up on her, she didn't know. She must have been stupid. To be fair, though, Caleb hadn't given out any hints either, other than the usual flirting.

Claire glanced over as Caleb tucked into his food with no preamble, and took a bite of the stringy stuff that professed to be chicken. Ah well, at least it was edible. She was starving, though, and ate with as much gusto as the man sat opposite her.

Her words appeared to give Caleb pause, though, and a more serious expression settled on his face. Claire wondered what she had said to cause such a change in mood, and all she wanted to do was to reach out and take his hand. This wasn't the time or the place, though.

Then the sincere apology fell from his lips, and Claire shook her head. "E taku tahu, don't," she said, her voice soft, and her eyes warm and full of forgiveness. "Don't apologise. It's done, and... well, we need to look forward now, not backwards. I wouldn't have changed last night for the world, you know."

She blushed as Caleb mentioned her part in things. "Well, I don't think I'd have had as much fun on my own," she said, that air of mischievous innocence back in her voice, the sparkle back in her eyes. "I certainly hope you wouldn't mind a similar night out soon?" To anyone listening in, aside from the smouldering heat in Claire's eyes, it would have sounded fairly innocent. "I'm free whenever we can make our shifts match up..."

Caleb laughed, it was good to be able to still joke with Claire even with how serious the conversation could turn at times. “Okay, okay I get it, you know my middle name for everyday of the week now.” He said, smiling happily.

He had a few more mouthfuls of the food in front of him, it was tasteless but filling a whole and although he would love to have tasted Claire's cooking he knew they wouldn't have made it back to base on time at all.

“Night out, night in, so long as I get to spend it in some amazing company I don't mind,” he said. Flattery would get him everywhere, he had learnt to be complimentary to almost most people, and it worked: nine times out of ten anyway. This time though, this time the flattery was sincere, he would love to either go out to a restaurant like their first night 'date' or spend it curled up on her bed just being silly with each other.

“Or in a break time slot, am sure we could have fun then,” he said that mischievous look back in his eye, or the fun he could have with a break. Whether they would even find their break time lining up, but he was willing to take a gamble.

"See? You do have a middle name after all," grinned Claire, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I think it suits you perfectly!" Well, it was perfect based on the previous twenty four hours, anyway. "We'll just have to make sure that it stays relevant, won't we?" She somehow didn't think that was going to be a problem.

The food on her plate rapidly cooling, Claire scooped up some mashed potato. "So what's on your rota today," she asked. Could be more or less anything, really. Caleb's job was certainly varied, and what he was scheduled to do might change from one day to the next. Kept things interesting, she supposed. Not that her own work was same old, same old. She never knew what could come through the infirmary doors from one minute to the next.

Claire glanced around, another look of pure innocence on her face. "Amazing company," she repeated, flashing Caleb a mischievous grin. "Who would that be, then? Someone I need to be jealous of?" She was already planning on what to cook for their next date. Well, that was if things didn't move to the bedroom as quickly as they had the night before. Given that it was likely to be a week or so before they had a chance at another date, there were no guarantees.

She shot Caleb a challenging look. "Oh, I'm sure we could," she agreed, taking a sip of her coffee. "Just enough time for... a chat and a coffee?" Her eyes, though, well they said otherwise. It was obvious that Claire was thinking of something far more interesting entirely.

"We'll just have to make sure that it stays relevant, won't we?" Well Caleb definitely liked the sound of that, not that he needed any encouragement, not from Claire, there was no hardship in enjoying her company none in the least. He didn't respond to that though, they were in a public (as public as the Mess Hall got) setting and he knew they had to keep the conversation at least rated a PG for other people.

Finishing up his meal, it had cooled considerably now and was more like a lump of rubber than actual food, he pushed his plate to the side, “Depends what's been broken, or am sure there is some weapons laying around that I could take a look at. It all depends on what happened during he day.” People often forgot that his main specialist skill was with weapons, he knew his demeanour came off as quite laid back and he helped more with the engineering side than weapons. He offered a shrug, there was lots of stuff he could end up doing, his job being pretty varied meant he could go from being unreasonably busy to actually sitting twiddling his thumbs. Which he might add had actually happened once, just once and it was on a night shift and it had been really quiet. That had been the longest night shift he'd experienced since joining the SGC, thankfully he hadn't had one like that in a while.

Leaning forwards as though he was bout to part some sage wisdom, he said, “Possibly, she's this amazing woman, got legs that go on for miles, eyes that let me know when she's pissed off at me or ready for another round.” He had lowered his voice at that last part, sharing a knowing smile with her as he took in the sight of the woman before him, the very one he was describing.

Caleb was known for being a flirt, that's what sprang to mind whenever anyone mentioned his name, and he liked that. Liked that he could make, at least the females, smile and for a moment feel like they had his undivided attention. But right there in that moment, as he looked at Claire and was finally seeing her for her and not just as a close friend, all he wanted to do was give Claire his undivided attention.

The moment was broken though when she answered his comment of meeting up with him and having coffee. Coffee! He shook his head laughing, “Suppose that depends how cold you like your coffee, sweetheart.”

Claire nodded as Caleb surmised what his day could be like. "Sounds like the kind of day I usually have," she said, giving him a small smile. "Never can tell what's coming through the doors of the infirmary." Mostly it was routine, sometimes serious, but, on occasion, there'd be some light relief. "At least I don't get people with objects... inserted where they shouldn't be very often," she chuckled. Some of the things she had seen in Wellington in particular had been unbelievable.

Giving up on her chicken at about the same time as Caleb cleared his plate, Claire pulled her bowl of what might be rice pudding towards her, and gave it a stir. Yup, rice pudding. Stodgy, but nothing she couldn't live with. She took her first mouthful, swallowing the tepid lumps as Caleb teased and flirted again.

Claire felt the blush stain her cheeks, and hoped that nobody was listening in and watching at the moment. "Sounds like she's really caught your attention, e kairoro," she said, her voice soft. She felt a warming in her chest as Caleb looked across the table at her, his eyes sincere even as his smile could be construed as somewhat lascivious. Five years she'd been alone, and five years she'd not felt anything like this. Caleb was eliciting emotions and sensations in her that Claire had thought long dead.

She wouldn't change it for the world.

Shooting Caleb an oh-so-innocent glance , Claire returned the smile and the laughter. "Oh. Did you mean something other than coffee," she replied, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I'm sorry, do we have our wires crossed here?" Of course they didn't, but every little word spoken between them, even here in the mess, came loaded with meaning and double entendre.

Caleb was really glad to not have been eating when Claire mentioned something about objects being inserted, he got that she was a Doctor or rather a surgeon, he understood there was times he couldn't get to meet up with her because she was quite literally arms deep in someone (something that conjured up images he really should be finding appealing right then), but that, that surprised him. He wasn't someone to get surprised easily, he'd heard it all the dirty jokes, the innuendos when a group of the lads got together, the flirts, the talks of who they'd slept with the previous night (it got very boring being cooped up on a Submarine sometimes).

He had heard it all. Shaking himself from his momentary lapse of surprise, he said, "Okay you have to tell me that story, you can't just say something like that and then not follow through." He put on a the best pleading eyes he could muster, which he knew wouldn't win her over that much, dropped the volume of his voice to carry on with, "I'll do anything you wish, if you explain." His hand laid on the table next to her arm, his thumb surreptitiously touching the warm skin of her wrist, it was butterfly touch, almost as though he wasn't even touching her.

"Not only has this amazing woman caught my attention," he added smiling, "But she got me under some kind of spell, you see I can't seem to stop looking at her or touching her."

He really, really wished he wasn't in a public place then, he wished he didn't have to go onto shift later, god he wished a lot of stuff for that day. But he was going to have to be content with sitting there at the overly large empty table, with people milling around in the background, not getting to say or do exactly what he wanted to in that moment.

The smile seemed to grow as he answered her last question, "Oh there was going to be so much more than coffee," he paused for an added effect of course, he leant in closer, "I was going to bring a snack as well. You know just to keep my energy levels up, these breaks they take a lot out of a guy."

The look on Caleb's face was priceless, and Claire grinned with more than a hint of mischief. She hadn't thought that she would have the ability to surprise him with something that - in her profession, at least - was rather inane. The fact that she had surprised him, though... well, that, in its way, was endearing.

Caleb gave her the puppy dog eyes, then swore that he would do anything she asked, just to hear the story. He didn't need to beg, especially as she felt the faintest of touches on her wrist. That was enough to make her melt. "I'll remember that, you know," she murmured, her eyes making promises to the man sat opposite her. "Now, let's see... what were the strangest ones I've seen?" She thought for a few moments. "Probably the most common was a mobile phone," she grinned. "Apparently, the vibrate function is just as good down below as in a pocket." Her grin stretched further. "Bottles were quite common too, and once... well, once, I even had to extract a garden gnome."

Claire laughed softly. Caleb seemed to have a romantic streak in him, one that she was seeing more often over the last few days. It was something she wouldn't have expected from the perpetual flirt. "And what about her? Does she feel the same about you," she teased. She hoped that he knew that the feeling was mutual.

"You know, I hope you can get away on time tonight," said Claire, her eyes bright. "I'd love you to come back to my place, if you would like to." She had to give him the out, just in case, but she thought that Caleb wouldn't want that out, not any more.

She gave a look of mock excitement. "A snack as well? Wow, that sounds like some break," she giggled, nudging her hand closer to Caleb's, just so they wouldn't lose contact. "And where are you planning on taking these breaks?" Her tone was pure mischief and mirth again, and her eyes sparkling. Exploring a relationship with Caleb was proving to be a whole lot of fun, especially dancing around everything in public.
