Claire carefully took another sample from Pendleton, sealing it away in its little pouch before turning her attention back to Sophie and Jake. Her expression through the mask was mildly harassed, and she gave Jake a tired smile through the glass.

"Another head would be more than welcome right about now," she said gratefully. Like her, Jake's specialism lay more in emergency medicine than in complex diagnostics, but, in a crisis, all the help that they could get was definitely needed. "Give us a few minutes, let us get out of these things, and we'll join you out there."

Claire headed for the airlock again, glancing at Sophie and grinning once Jake was unable to see their faces in order to lip read. "You might want to push that lower jaw back into place," she chuckled, shaking her head. "Or is that the point? Make the delectable Jake think that it's dislocated so that he has to get all up close and personal to fix it?" There was a ringing laugh in her voice, even as she started the onerous task of removing the full body condom.

Still, it was quicker getting out of it than into it, and Claire stepped out of it, kicking it to one side, and into the second airlock, where she was duly sprayed with disinfectant and antiseptic, before the door opened and released her into the wide world again. She greeted Jake with a tired smile. "Okay, so tell me what you know already, and I'll do my best to get you up to speed."

Jake smiled back at Sophie. He didn't know her well, but they had been introduced a few months back. He always enjoyed hearing her accent. There is just something about a British accent.

Jake turned his attention to the surgeon and smiled at her, giving her a nod of understanding before waiting patiently for the two women to emerge from the airlock.

Claire looked exhausted. Jake gave her a sympathetic smile, before responding, "Honestly, I don't know much. Glanced at their charts, saw your notes on basic condition, administered drugs, and the changes in their vitals. I've been trying to track you down for a while, but apparently kept missing you."

He looked at the two educated women, quickly analyzing their condition, and continued "Do y'all need some coffee or anything? Maybe you can fill me in on any additional tests or findings while we get a quick cup or something to eat? Not sure how much I'll be able to help, but figured any amount of assistance was better than no assistance."

The last thing the women in the isolation room needed was their attending to crash due to exhaustion or starvation.

Taking the last of the samples she needed, Sophie followed Claire to the airlock and felt the door close to behind her, separating them from the poor woman who were suffering from the weirdest affliction she’d ever had the chance to look in on.

She felt the flush instantly as her Hazmat suited companion pointed out just how struck Sophie had been with the Dr who’d interrupted them, and unable to make eye contact she wished the world would swallow her up. It didn’t matter that the Kiwi was being light hearted and good spirited about the whole thing, fact was it didn’t matter, Sophie was mortified at being caught gawking like some school girl.

“Um, yeah – Don’t tell anyone about that” She stammered, amazed the inside of her suit hadn’t steamed up as she pulled the head part free, and felt the cool air take some of the heat from her cheeks.

Shrugging her arms free she wriggled til the suit slid down past her hips where she was able to step out of it, stretching out and enjoying the sensation of unrestricted movement. Her blush was exacerbated by the exertion, and she stood, hands on hips, a sweaty, hot mess.

“and now I look less glamorous” Muttering to herself and finally able to touch her hair unencumbered, she pulled it loose and then smoothed it down and back into its ponytail, realising that was about as presentable as she was going to be able to make herself without a shower and a do over.

Moving forward into the second air lock she closed her eyes and tried now to inhale as she felt the dual sprays spray their fine mist over her, in theory killing anything that she’d picked up from inside the room. Of course, if something was able to permeate the thick skin of the suit, then she wasn’t entirely sure what good a dousing in Dettol was going to do.

Freedom!

Released back into the general populace, Sophie stood and listened as the two Doctor’s talked shop, playing idly with the rewards her quest into the Isolation rooms had bagged her.

Exhaling audibly as the notion of coffee was mentioned, Sophie nodded appreciatively.
“Coffee good – Food, not so much” the thought of eating after seeing those poor woman was enough to make her blanch, coffee however was going to be essential if she planned on staying awake long enough to get some tests run.

“I’m going to need to get these samples stored properly before I visit the donko. If it’s all the same to you, can we walk and talk?”

Claire hadn't meant to seriously embarrass Sophie, not really, and she smiled warmly at her friend. "Your secret's safe with me," she chuckled quietly, before twitching up her eyebrows. "Maybe... you should ask him out?" She couldn't help but notice that Sophie seemed lonely sometimes. Of course, she knew a little about the woman's past, but that had been a while ago. Maybe she just needed a little nudge in the right direction, who knew?

However, that was the end of the conversation on Sophie's lack-of-love-life. Claire certainly wasn't going to let Jake hear anything of the quick chat on the subject, and she swiftly shut up as she exited the airlock. "Sorry, I was closeted away with Sophie for a while." She gestured towards Sophie as she left the isolation rooms. "You two have met, right?" She wasn't sure, but she could at least affect introductions if they hadn't. It might be the little nudge Sophie needed to dip her toe back into the dating pool, too.

"If you've read my notes and the charts, there's not much change," she admitted ruefully. "Their condition is progressing, and we don't seem to be getting anywhere on figuring out what it is." Claire pushed a hand back through her hair in frustration. "Honestly, it's pissing me off." She smiled gratefully at Jake's thoughtful suggestion, though. "Coffee and food of some sort sounds great," said Claire, smiling slightly. Her stomach gave a rumble, as if in acknowledgment.

"I don't think I've eaten since breakfast, so..." She shrugged. "Walking and talking is good. Your labs first, Soph, then the mess?"

Jake smiled at the two women as the agreed to his suggestion for coffee and/or food.

Jake nodded at Claire, gave Sophie a big smile, and said, "Dr. Edwards and I see each other around the base occasionally, but I don't think we've ever worked closely on a case before. It'll be good to finally get a look at her work. I've heard she's quite the biochemist." He gave Sophie another quick smile.

Jake's smile quickly faded and a frown appeared just as quickly. No real change, progression of the condition, and no idea on what was causing it? That didn't sound good. They needed to get working, and fast. There was no telling how long they were going to survive.

Jake nodded at the two women, agreeing with the plan of action. "Sounds good to me. What possible pathogens have you tested for so far? Or are you thinking its something autoimmune or allergy related?" He walked over to the door to the hallway as he talked, opened it, and gestured for the two women to walk through. "After you." Despite having moved from the Southern US after high school, he retained many of the motions that were drilled into him as a child. His parents raised him to be a southern gentleman, and he did his best to keep that training.

Frozen mid action, Sophie felt like a rabbit in the headlights as Claire voiced her suggestion. Casting her eyes downward she resumed the task of removing her suit and tried to gloss over the remark, before deciding that ignorance would be rude. “Hmmm” A murmur as she wiggled about was better than no response at all.

It wasn’t that the notion was without merit, she missed the companionship that having someone bought to her life, she missed having someone to share her day with and, not that she was going to voice this out loud, she missed the physical side of having someone as well.

Glad in more ways than one to be out of the small room, Sophie left the awkward conversation behind when she stepped into the hall, and found herself introduced in a not so subtle way. She would need to have a word with her Kiwi friend about a few things.

“Hi, stick with Sophie thats fine, and thanks – You too” She managed her own smile back, warmed by the slight pink that coloured her cheeks, hoping it would be taken as evidence of her prior costume change and not something else.

It seemed to be a unanimous decision that they were going to get something to eat, or in her case, drink and she moved to head the group, nodding a silent thanks to Jake as he held the door open for herself and Claire.

It wasn’t that long a walk back to her lab, and Sophie kept herself a pace or two in front of the others, close enough to be part of the conversation, but not wanting to hamper them whilst they got into the nitty gritty medical side of things that she didn’t have a scoobies about. Sure she was practised in the theory of it all, but flesh and blood, and breathing were a hell of a lot different than slabbed samples.

“Genetic’s seemed to be an initial shout. Something that likes the X chromosome or hates the Y – Of course all theories are fluid pending further input” She slowed her pace and turned slightly as she spoke, not wanting to be speaking back to them like a tour guide.

“Of course it could also be alien flu for all we know at this point”

As expected. Sophie was non-committal about the idea of asking Jake out, and Claire merely shrugged. "Up to you," she said, a light smile on her lips, and she left the subject well alone. Giving someone a nudge in the right direction was one thing, but actively matchmaking and pushing them too far was quite another.

Nodding, Jake confirmed that he at least seemed to know who Sophie was, and she couldn't keep the tiniest of smiles from her lips as Sophie pressed him to use her first name. "Yeah, she's bloody good at her job, that's for sure," confirmed Claire, leaving it at that. Anything that happened between Jake and Sophie from here on in was entirely up to them. She'd effectively introduced them, so her work here was done.

At least when it came to persuading Sophie that dating again wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Sophie got in there first, too, when Jake asked what had been tested for, and Claire glanced away to hide the small smile. Oh yeah. Sophie was definitely keen on this one. She waited until Sophie had finished before answering Jake's question directly. "You name it, it's being tested for, even right down to bubonic plague. Early indications aren't bringing up even a close match. Seeing as it only affected the women, we need to look at a genetic factor, which is why I've asked Sophie to help." She shrugged again, looking completely helpless.

"Those bloody diagnosticians better come back with something soon. I don't think either of those two will last another day unless we get on top of this."

"Great. Call me Jake." Jake was totally oblivious to Sophie's blushing.

Jake listened carefully as they walked to Sophie's lab. They had already tested for so much. Everything he had originally thought about. Which made sense. Claire was a good doctor and would have jumped on all the most obvious things immediately. A genetic component was most likely, sense the males on the team weren't affected.

"And there was nothing that the two women did that the males on the team didn't do, or vice versa? No possible environmental component?"

The conversation seemed to make the walk to her lab half the distance it normally seemed to be, and she listened as Claire filled in the more relevant Dr side of things, nodding her head in acknowledgement as her part in this play was mentioned.

“Not that I’m a genetic whizz kid or anything but I know my X from my Y, and that seems to be where this issue is lurking … maybe” She mirrored Claire with her own shrug, and a small smile that only lifted on one side, not touching her eyes at all.
She stopped as she came upon her stop, and motioned for the others to hang tight for a moment.

“I’ll just be a second”

Swiping her card to gain entry, she nodded her head at one of the technicians who looked up at her entry, and moved through to the small fridge near the back that she used to store biologicals before testing. Storing them and ensuring the white board was updated with the date, contents and her initials, Sophie made a quick detour into the small annexed portion off the main lab she was using as an office.

Pulling her hand bag out of the bottom drawer she scrabbled her compact and small brush, trying to sort out the birds nest her hair had become inside the hazmat suit. Satisfied after about 3 minutes of preening that her hair was presentable, Sophie stashed her bag back in the bottom drawer of her desk and hurried back through the lab to join the others.

“Okay – Coffee” She smiled at the two Drs, before waiting for one of them to take the lead up to the mess.

Claire smiled as Sophie outlined her knowledge, downplaying it somewhat, and she twitched an eyebrow up. "Ah, come on now, that's like saying that I know the difference between a spleen and a liver," she chuckled. "You're being too modest by half." While she wasn't a geneticist, Sophie's skillset meant that she might catch something that the geneticists might miss.

She sighed again, shaking her head. "The entire team were together the whole time, but I was wondering about maybe an insect bite or something, something that could have been missed during their post mission checkup." It was a long shot, and nigh on impossible to prove now that their skin was effectively turning into scales.

Waiting for Sophie to sort herself out, Claire smiled tiredly at Jake. "You look almost as beat as me," she remarked, shrugging. "How long've you been on for now?" She hoped that it wasn't as long as her current shift, but, knowing Jake, it was likely to be longer.

The fact that Sophie has brushed her hair through didn't go amiss, and Claire just twitched her eyebrows up at the other woman. Words just weren't needed. "Coffee, and, for me at least, something to eat. If I'm going to be up for Christ knows how long looking at this, I don't want to end up keeling over and twatting my head on the floor. Or worse." She sighed again, moving off down the corridor with all the energy she could muster, which wasn't much.

"Maybe we should start a sweepstake on this bloody thing," she muttered. Utterly inappropriate, but she knew that Jake and Sophie wouldn't take offence. Without the blackest of humour, there was no way a doctor could get through the day.
