The briefing room had been set aside for the handful of medical professionals who would be going on the trip to get their survival briefing before going through the gate. Not a lesson or a lecture, they'd been told, but a straight announcement from their military handler on the outing. The various medical doctors (including the one and only dentist that had been brought in on the Stargate Project) filed in and found their seats around the table. The head of the table, however, was being blocked by two U.S. Marines in MP markings who were not geared for leaving.

The gate opening was scheduled for just about 20 minutes from right that moment.

(feel free to take your seat)

Caiden worked at the SGC for quite awhile now and as he is a medical doctor, he has not been required to go off-world through the stargate for anything, not even any medical emergencies. Caiden was pleased with that since he knows what exactly happens when you travel through the stargate for the whole short trip of only like one second or so. Caiden is also pleased that his first time through the gate shouldn't be under any heavy fire or threat of Goa'uld attack, although that could happen without any notice, they are well everywhere...

Caiden walked into the briefing room and took a seat next to another doctor, whom he didn't recognize but he did know he was a doctor, since practically only doctors and their military escorts were going through the stargate, and all military personnel are wearing their uniforms. Caiden was excited and nervous about this trip, he wasn't gitty about getting his body taken apart and re-materialized... nope he thought his body was just fine the way it is, and although no one died from it or even arrived missing a limb or another body part, there is always a first time for everything...

Taft entered the moment the second hand on the wall clicked over to the hour of the meeting. "I am Sergeant Major David Taft. Some of my people will call me Taft, you will call me Sgt Major." He started speaking even as he continued to the head of the table. He was already geared and armed for the trip, a combat shotgun slung behind him against the side of a fully packed tactical pack. There was a boonie cap tucked into the strap atop his opposite shoulder. "My job is to ensure your safety while on this little field trip. We are going to a green zone, an established secure area populated with long term friendlies. The planet is not known for abnormal disease, flora, or fauna. I am primarily a precaution against the unlikely event of an enemy incursion. That said, I will not lose people to happenstance and poor discipline."

He indicated his own gear. "Before you leave this base you will be checked by a member of Marine Recon to make sure your gear and equipment is buttoned up tight. We will secure the perimeter of the hospital site, we will maintain a secure presence, and if for any reason you need or decide to leave the perimeter of the field hospital you will inform a Sergeant who will inform me and assign you an escort detail. There will be combat medics in our Off World Team, trauma can and will be handled immediately followed by evac. Are there any questions?"

Marines... Marines... Marines... That is all that was running through Caiden's head. So damn stubborn and always so demanding thinking they're the the only ones who go into combat, or that they're the only ones who know how to fight... Well Caiden may just be a Doctor, but he is an Air Force Officer and he is a Trauma Surgeon and a trained USAF Flight Surgeon... He has some pretty sweet credentials under his belt. He may never have been in combat but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be good at it when it comes down to it.

Caiden listened as the Marine spoke and remained silent and with no questions when he finished he just shook his head. This Marine may be a Sergeant Major but Lieutenant still outranks that, although he does clearly have way more years under his belt and surely was in combat before. Caiden knew what these guys thought of Lieutenants sometimes even Captains, they may be young but everyone has a job to do and they're not all combat positions. Every branch and every position is essential and important, obviously that is why the Marine is acting so tough, but he may want to remember he can't boss around any commissioned officer of any rank...

Everybody appeared to at least be pretending to pay attention to his quick run down, that was a start considering most of them thought their rank, or lack there of, meant they didn't -have- to pretend for his benefit. Taft manage not to sigh and held out his hand, into which one of his subordinates delivered a clip board. "Dr. McFadden, you're with Corporal Stevens. Dr. Laurie, you're with Corporal Mitchel..."[/color] He went around the room reading off pairings, medical types with combat specialists. The military medics were a flying unit, meant to assist whoever needed assisting as the day's patients came rolling in rather than looking to security or organization. Until finally he said, [b]"Dr. West, you're with me."

He handed the clipboard off to the minion that had handed it to him and nodded to the room. "Report to the gate room, this should be a nice quiet trip with many warm fuzzy feelings and many smiling allies at the end of the day. A nice change of pace for some of us." The Sgt. Major gestured for Caiden to come along and headed for the exit that would take them down to the gate room, though he didn't watch to see if the man did so as it wasn't important until the it was time to gate off-world. Then he'd keep an eye on the Lieutenant, till then Caiden was a grown adult who was welcome to decide whether or not he was interested in traveling across the galaxy near instantaneously via molecular blah blah blah. And more science words that a good Marine didn't actually have to know.

The Sergeant Major started to read off the names and pair them up with his people and it appeared as though he forgot Caiden, until he said Caiden is with him. 'Great...' Caiden said to himself in his head, Caiden is a young guy and although he is a Trauma Surgeon he still thinks he has a sense of humor and is funny, but this guy, he seemed way to serious and with the graying hair. Caiden's assumption appeared to be correct...

Caiden stood up and left the conference room with the Sergeant Major and with his bag which he packed to the max, should be more than enough then he also had his medical gear in another bag he packed, although he knew there would be medical supplies, Caiden liked to have more than enough in case something did happen. Prepare for the worse and hope for the best, it is a saying in both the military and medical professions alike among many others, but going off-world into a hostile galaxy ruled by parasites, it isn't exactly friendly. Caiden liked the protection the Marines gave, they are definitely the best at ground combat, but still the Goa'uld can easily wipe them out from orbit.

Caiden arrived in the Gate room and one of the Force Recon guys started to touch Caiden's bags and he just stared at them. He may be a Surgeon and a junior CO but he knows how to pack a bag, it wasn't his first time packing and he always had a go bag ready in case he was needed off-world or anywhere else really. Caiden then waited for everyone to arrive, he was a little nervous but eh plenty of people did it before and they never had any missing or misplaced body parts, this should be a cakewalk...

The Force Recon guys didn't even blink, an officer might be able to torment them but a non-com would be the instrument of torture. They were more afraid of the latter than the former. The rest of the expedition trickled in and Taft finished the final touches of his gear, including throwing a bag of cheapo hard candy in a side pocket of his pack. He shouldered the auto-shotgun he favored and headed up the ramp, pausing when he had elevation and looking the group over with a critical eye before nodding to himself and heading through the gate with three Force Recon members flanking him.

Ten seconds later his crackling radio voice could be heard from everybody's personal unit. "Arrival point clear, perimeter set. Send 'em on." The marines were the first to get through the gate, jogging up the outer edge of the ramp and straight through the gate, but were followed closely by the medical personnel from all branches and civilian sector.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The other side was a sub-tropical world, a mix of temperate region looking trees and rainforest-style undergrowth. The humidity was high but the season was that world's version of mid-spring so things weren't terrible weather wise, though could imagine a cool breeze turning it into a sudden rain. The marines were fanning out forward of the gate platform but while alert they had their weapons in the ready standby position and were all standing upright as they did so at a casual pace. Cautious, not aggressive. Taft stood at the top of the stairs, looking outward as the others came out of the gate behind him.

Caiden was nervous when he looked at the Stargate. He read plenty of mission reports before and it was never usually good, he saw the evidence of that when he had to work on various SG team members that had serious wounds, most of it which were caused by the Goa'uld. The Goa'uld were definitely powerful and they had a lot of Jaffa, but they weren't as disciplined or organized compared to the military forces on Earth, especially the US. The US Military is used to war, and pretty good at it, but that was nothing compared to the strength of the Jaffa. The only good thing they had that the Goa'uld and Jaffa didn't was stealth and common sense. Jaffa didn't care if they died, they just did what their "God" told them to do, not very smart.

Caiden walked up the ramp and touched the event horizon of the wormhole and it definitely didn't feel like water although it did look like it, sort of. Caiden closed his eyes and walked through. The other side was nice, not entirely warm but not cold either. Caiden wore the green BDU's that all off-world teams wore, he wore a vest too and had his bag and had a sidearm in his tactical holster. For a Doctor, Caiden wasn't a bad shot, maybe not great but better than most doctor's, trauma surgeons are always up for a challenge and not afraid to get their hands dirty.

Caiden stood at the bottom of the stone steps waiting for the Sergeant Major and everyone else to walk through. Caiden wasn't sure what to expect, he never liked being in the field but then again he never was in a combat setting, he was only stationed at a US Air Force hospital and they had everything they ever needed there. Out here was a different story, it may be a green zone but we're not on Earth...

Once everybody was through, Taft came down the steps himself and held his hand high to make a gesture that had the perimeter Marines coming back in. "Medical types, single file. Marines, form up." He pointed at Caiden as he headed to the front of the line. "You, on my hip. We will be there in ten minutes and then your lot can start doing your thing." The Sgt Major consulted his watch mounted compass, compared it to the contents of his forearm mounted map holder, and started them off a few degrees left of the gate's plum-line. The marines fell into two staggered lines, one on each side of the line of various experts, and the whole thing got moving.

True to his word, they were at the village in ten minutes. Nine minutes, Forty-Seven seconds to be exact. And then the expedition's ambassador type stepped up while Taft just stood there by Caiden. The village's headman was very happy to see them, seemed to be only slightly put off by the security element with the doctors, and had cleared out the village's central shelter for the doctors to work with enough space not to interfere with each other. The ambassador lead them there and Taft had his people fan out while the medics moved in to assist the doctors as required. There was already a line. Taft eyed it and spoke in a conversational tone. "Looks like the next couple of villages over got wind of the free healthcare."
