"Saluting. Right." Claire grinned at Caleb, shaking her head in disbelief. "So you mean to say that if I started saluting around you, I'd stir you into a frenzy of uncontrollable lust?" Claire couldn't help it, and broke into peals of giggles. She loved that she and Caleb were able to just tease one another like this. It certainly made a change from the somewhat too-serious Tama. As far as she was concerned, laughter was an integral part of a successful relationship, and she had find memories of her parents regularly doubled up with laughter. If she could be half that happy with Caleb, she'd be a lucky woman.

Claire would have had to have been blind not to notice the restraint displayed on Caleb's face as his eyes ran over her outfit again. He had no idea what he was doing to her. Right then, she would have been just as happy to go back to their room and lose herself in the man she adored, but there would be plenty of time for that later.

Tama had loved going out as a couple, almost showing her off as a possession. He might have been unfaithful, but that didn't change the fact that he had liked people to know that he had staked a claim on her. The vast engagement ring had been the perfect example of that, and Claire had taken great pleasure in damaging it irreparably, and sending it back to him in the most public manner possible.

She might be laid back and easy going on the whole, but Claire had been humiliated and scorned. Tama had deserved it, and more besides. She hadn't dwelled on revenge, though, choosing instead to move on and put him before her as best she could.

It hadn't been until she had met Caleb that she had truly succeeded.

Claire snuggled in to Caleb's side as they stepped out into the night air. While not bustlingly busy, there was a fair smattering of revellers on the street, their costumes ranging from simple affairs to the dazzling and spectacular.

"Bloody hell, I feel underdressed now," she grinned, shaking her head. "Maybe we should have done the whole masked ball thing after all." A couple skittered past them, the woman dressed as Marie Antoinette, her skirts swishing along the pavement, and the man in a Venetian plague mask. It was a sight to behold.

"Apparently, if we go left and keep going, we can't miss it," Claire said, cocking her head in the right direction. Her arms goosepimpled with the cool air, and she tucked herself more firmly against Caleb. For warmth. Honest.

Claire laughed as Caleb told her to drink as much as she wanted. "You seem to forget I can drink most people under the table anyway," she chuckled. Caleb had never seen her get truly munted before, and she wasn't about to let him see it this evening, either. There was a time and a place for getting completely drunk, and this was most definitely not it.

Her heels clicked on the flagstones as they made their way down Chartres Street, and Claire glanced up at Caleb. "Any preferences for what you'd like to do after dinner?"

“Why don't you try it and find out,” he said, almost hoping that she would start doing such a thing. Honestly with her in that costume, saluting at him, yeah he was pretty sure that getting arrested would be straight back on the table.

It was something else being able to joke with Claire like that, out in the open where no one was going to look at them strangely. Or rather him strangely, people back at the mountain still could not really get use to him being with one person all the time. So joking in public, smiling as much as he was currently doing, it was novelty and one he didn't want to wear off any time soon.

Caleb wanted to spend the evening laughing, joking and just generally having a good time with Claire. That was what he wanted to do, whether it be their first vacation together or their last, all he ever wanted was to be making her smile to keep the contended feeling in his chest there for longer.

He was going to have to get some drinks in him though, because with them kind of thoughts swirling round his head he wasn't sure how much more of a romantic sap he could be that evening. He did not want to use up all his romanticism before the night was done, not with the plans he had in place.

It was like being sent to another planet as a couple walked passed dressed in very much more over the top costumes than there's. He smiled at them as they passed, at least they weren't going to be the only ones dressed up, he knew people often went all out for Halloween with the decorations, costumes.

It was something he himself had never indulged in as a child, he was British Halloween when he was a kid was not such a big thing, it was just another day. But since he'd come to the States, well he realised just how seriously some people took it.

He pulled Claire a little closer to him as the Marie Antoinette passed them by, “Oh I don't know so much, think you might be dressed just right,” he said with a wink.

He nodded his head as Claire said which way to go, he steered them towards the left, passing a couple more people as they did so. It was going to be an interesting evening that was for sure with nearly everyone they seemed to be passing dressed up, he had always been one for a woman in nice form fitting clothing but hell he was impressed by what some of the men were wearing as well.

“I've got a few preferences,” he answered glibly, the smile still firmly in place. “Depends if you want to go back to our room,” that was weird to say as well. “Or find somewhere to dance?”

Claire observed Caleb for a second or two, before letting a sly smile slide into place. "Aye aye, Petty Officer Williams," she replied, giving him a crisp salute. God alone only knew what Caleb would do, myriad emotions dancing over his face. He had laid down a challenge, she had responded, and now the ball was in his court. Claire could tell this evening was going to be fun.

Caleb seemed to be enjoying the fact that they were able to be completely open about their relationship, and a pang of sadness rippled through Claire. She hated having to hide the fact that they were a couple, even though it was more or less common knowledge now. It was more for propriety's sake than because they were breaking any rules, but it was nevertheless frustrating.

There was an air of merriment throughout the French Quarter, and Claire did her best to soak up the atmosphere. New Orleans was one of the very few places in America that she had longed to visit, and here she was, ticking it off her bucket list with the man she loved. She couldn't imagine anything better. She only hoped that Caleb would enjoy himself as well.

Caleb's eyes were as big as saucers as they watched a steady stream of people, many in elaborate costumes, pass them by. "I'd say we definitely underestimated the dress code tonight," she replied. Many of the revellers were masked, and she wondered whether there was perhaps a masquerade ball they might yet be able to gain entry to. It was an interesting thought.

Chartres Street was flat, and it was a relatively quick and easy walk to the restaurant. Claire's arms were cold, and the chill air had loaned a red flush to any exposed skin. Peering in through the windows, she could see that the restaurant was busy, but not uncomfortably so, and she turned to Caleb, a challenge in her eyes as he answered her question.

"Dance??"

Claire's voice was incredulous, and she laughed, looking at Caleb in a disbelieving manner. She gestured at his body, shooting him a look of utmost appreciation. "All this and the man dances as well?" Claire laughed again. "You know, I'd never have thought of you as a dancer. Really? You can actually dance?" Claire wasn't someone who classed herself as a dancer, considering her version of dancing as being nothing other than shuffling in time to music. She shrugged,a broad smile brightening her face.

"I hadn't considered going dancing," she admitted. "I was going to suggest going to a proper New Orleans jazz club in Treme. We could dance there, if you don't mind that kind of music?"

Caleb stopped walking as Claire turned to face him and gave him a clean, crisp salute. God if only they weren't in public he would be doing so very many things to her right then and there, instead he let just his face mirror her sly smile, before stepping up close to her, hands resting on her hips. No one was paying them any attention now, the crowds wrapped up in their own doings, he leant down slightly and brushed the lightest of kisses against her mouth. Before stepping back, the sly smile still on his face, "That is just a taste of what that does to me, Doctor Te Atua," he said, quietly.

He walked backwards a few steps away from her, the smile had softened to less flirty one and more sweet now he had stepped back. Well she might have challenged him, but he could make promises for what was to happen later, he resisted the urge to laugh. The whole atmosphere was rather intense from the way Claire looked to how he felt, to the people milling around him at the time.

Caleb once more took hold of her arm, as they made their way past people, some of the costumes were getting even more elaborate and there was more and more people in masks. He wondered if there was some kind of masked parade going on further into the Quarter and he wondered if once they had eaten if he could persuade Claire to go searching for it. Like their own mini adventure in an adventure, he was pretty sure it would be fun.

"Oh I don't know, sweetheart, I think we are appropriately dressed for this evenings entertainment, don't you," he said smiling at her once more. He noticed that she was feeling chill, he was of half the mind to offer her his jacket - being in the romantic mood that he was - but they found the restaurant before he could offer.

It was crowded but not heavily so, which he was grateful for, there was nothing worse than big crowds at a restaurant and although he was not one to complain it did make him feel frustrated. Maybe it was that impatient side to him, that didn't like it when places were overly busy, he just didn't know.

He stopped short as Claire mentioned the dancing, she seemed shocked that he would suggest such a thing. Not that he was any kind of professional dancer of course, but he could at least hold a rhythm for at least five minutes before it all went to pot.

Instead of answer her question, a mischievous glint entered his eye, a devilish smile crawled across his face as he stepped closer to her once more. "Dance, my dear, sweetheart Doctor, you have no idea." he said quietly.

Before he managed to wrap his arms around her in a dance pose before lifting her slightly off her far too high heels and danced her around in a quick circle. It was fast, furious and absolute hilarious and as he spun her round he couldn't help laughing as he finally set her on the feet once more.

None of the people passing by had stopped them, in fact a few of them had laughed at his antics and moved out of his way. He was rather red faced by the time he had finished, there was an air of love bubbling up from him, he couldn't believe himself he had just done that. But it had felt right, complete in a way and he would do it again in a heartbeat.

His hands rested on her hips, as he finally answered her question slightly breathlessly, "I can dance, a little and wherever you want to go once we have eaten, well that is fine with me."

Claire's eyes sparkled as she watched Caleb's reaction to her salute. She hadn't actually expected much: after all, being turned on by a woman saluting him was pretty weird, right? But then, the atmosphere between them that evening was charged with something almost undefinable. They were walking on a knife edge, dancing a very fine line between behaving in a socially acceptable manner and their evening descending into debauchery before it had even begun.

Caleb's fingers curled into her hips, and Claire returned the barely-there kiss, wanting nothing more than to deepen it and pull Caleb to her. She didn't care that they were on the street, a busy street at that, she just wanted to feel his body pressed against hers as they devoured one another's lips. Still, it looked as though ther tiny kiss was all she was going to get for now, and she mock-pouted as Caleb made it clear that that was that. "That had better be a tiny downpayment on a big promise," she grinned, blowing him a kiss and taking his arm again.

The street was getting busier now, and Claire used the opportunity to snuggle in to Caleb a little bit more. She hadn't felt this free in a long time. For the first time in as long as she could remember, she was able to be completely herself, with no fear of reprisals. Caleb had been the only person to see the real Claire, the woman behind the doctor, since she had come to America, and now they were alone in a strange city, she didn't have to worry about anyone they knew seeing them together, or being caught doing something that might get them into trouble.

New Orleans wasn't called the Big Easy for nothing.

"Okay," Claire replied, rolling her eyes and giving her voice a long-suffering note. "I don't think I told you that you look bloody gorgeous tonight, did I?" And he did. Caleb might not have gone "full Bond", so to speak, but the suit and the tight tee showed off his physique to perfection. She would quite like to see that suit on the floor.

Caleb seemed to take amusement in the fact that she was shocked that he could dance. For a split second, Claire spotted a mischievous glint in his eyes, and she didn't get a chance to do or say anything before being quite literally swept off her feet and spun around the sidewalk. "Caleb," she squeaked, before her voice turned to ringing laughter. "What are you doing?"

If it hadn't been for the ankle straps on her shoes, she was certain that she would have lost them as Caleb spun them both around. Bystanders got out of their way, and Claire was certain that she noticed a camera flashing. Caleb laughed as he placed her on the ground again, and Claire stumbled a little, dizzy from all the spinning.

"You're crazy," she giggled, steadying herself by placing her hands on Caleb's shoulders, even as his hands settled on her hips. "You're crazy, and I love you." Claire slipped a hand behind Caleb's head, and pulled him in for a soft, tender kiss. When she pulled back, her eyes were sparkling in the lights coming from the restaurant.

"Yes."

"That was just the start of a down payment for later on," he added, letting his tone take on a seductive quality. It was a taste of what was to come and of so much more for the future, the salute might have sent him into a bit of heated state but he could control himself whilst in public. At least until they had eaten at least.

It was a promise of the evening and the weekend, something that he could give whilst without actually saying the words out loud to her. Despite the fact that there was so many words he wanted to say to her in that moment, he wanted to declare as much love as was possible to do - despite the fact that if he said it, it would not come across as well as he meant it - he wanted people to know he was with her.

That this astounding woman had actually given in to his flirting that day in the gym and he had taken that move to make them something more than just friends. It was like since that day everything had been on a complete whirlwind that accumulated to this trip right now, so it felt like he was living on a high, one that did not want to dissipate any time soon. He was going to take advantage of that for as long as he could.

"You told me," he answered honestly. Actually he couldn't remember if she had actually told him that, but honestly he didn't really care, she had been nothing but smiles all night and he had not wanted to ruin that by seeking compliments to himself. But it was nice to hear, he was quite pleased that he had pleased her.

"You look stunning as well." Which he was sure he had told her several times that evening in one form or another.

He was still breathing quickly as he stood in front of her just staring at her, her own face flushed and mirroring the excitement from his own face. He knew he was crazy, completely crazy in that moment but that was what she did to him and being in New Orleans with no responsibility to the SGC in that moment it was a heady feeling.

Then she said, 'yes', just the one word, one word that he frowned at because he honestly did not remember asking her a question. So he had no idea what she was actually answering, because he was stood there in the middle of the street with her in his hands and her saying 'yes'.

"Yes?" he asked, wondering what on Earth she was on about. He studied her face, trying to see what she was answering, why she saying that one word, then his mind drifted back to why they were taking this vacation together.

It was going to be the last time - possibly - that they would be able to be alone together before he jetted off to Atlantis. He felt his breath catch, his stomach drop, and he was sure that he was sweating in the form fitting suit.

"Yes!" he said, frown forming into a brilliant smile. He pulled her close once more, kissing her right there once more in the middle of the street - he was sure there was a whistle off in the distance - before letting her go. "You're sure? Completely sure? You've decided to join me on the craziest thing this side of, well this side of the USA."

He felt almost giddy with the knowledge that he was going to be going to Atlantis with basically the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. The astonishing woman that not only dressed up in a sailor costume, but also said yes to going to a whole different galaxy with him.

Caleb's voice and eyes gave Claire the come-on that she knew had been lurking just beneath the surface since they had landed on New Orleans, and she flicked her eyebrows upwards in a challenge. "I'll hold you to that, e te tau," she replied, reaching out and running a finger down the lapel of his jacket. He really did look bloody good, and it would be a distraction, sitting across from him in the restaurant. Food wouldn't be the first thing on her mind, of that she was certain.

This weekend away was something special, something to be treasured, and that meant going with whatever experiences came their way. Eating in a proper Cajun restaurant in the French Quarter was definitely not something she wanted to miss, no matter how much she would like to take Caleb back to their hotel and stay there all weekend. Halloween in the French Quarter was also second only to Mardi Gras, and not something she wanted to miss.

Claire smiled warmly as Caleb dismissed the compliment. She knew she hadn't put into words how attractive she found him that evening, and how much that suit was doing for her, but it was sweet of him to pretend that she had. She knew that he was way out of her league, and was seen as a real catch, but none of that mattered. They just fitted.

She blushed. "Thank you," she said, her voice soft, and her cheeks flaming. She would never get used to how Caleb seemed to see her. She had never felt particularly attractive, and yet Caleb seemed to view her as someone beautiful. He made her feel beautiful when she was in his arms, and that was absolutely priceless to her.

Claire's eyes studied Caleb's face intently as she said that one word, that single word, that had the power to change everything. His expression remained blank for a few seconds.

"Yes," she repeated, her head cocked slightly to one side, a smile growing on her lips. "You asked me a question, remember? Oh, about a week and a half ago?"

And then the penny dropped.

The smile on Caleb's face was incandescent, and he pulled her into a kiss, a passionate kiss that Claire returned as though her life depended on it. There was no going back now, and she found that she had no wish to.

"Yes, I'm sure," she giggled, feeling quite giddy at the turn of events. "Completely sure. I'll go with you to Atlantis." In a heartbeat, Claire committed her life to the man who had changed everything for her, the man who had taught her what it was like to truly be in love. She grinned. "That was the answer you wanted, wasn't it?"

"Is that a promise," he said, winking at her once more, the sexy smile still firmly in place. Honestly if that was just a small down payment for what was to come, then well he was going to be asking her to do a lot more saluting to him before the night was over. Well that was if they ever actually made it as far as any foreplay, because honestly as much as he could laugh and joke with Claire sometimes, just sometimes there wasn't much time before they got together.

He let the hand trail across his buttons, there was a small laugh as she did such a thing, if that briefest of kisses was his down payment then the touches Claire was leaving on him was hers. God had he really become that much of a romantic that the mere thought of a touch from the woman stood in front of him was enough to bring anticipation for the rest of the night.

Caleb had not quite realised how far he had come in the last month from doing nothing but one night stands, to this being in a completely committed relationship. There was no daunting anxiety that this was all going to crumble away from him, there was no doubt in his mind that they were both on the same page at times. He was unsure whether anyone had noticed the change in him, he still joked as openly as he did with the people on base, still flirted with every female he came across - because honestly even a little nice flirting made people feel better at times - but none of it meant as much any more.

It seemed that standing there, looking at Claire he realised that the previous year of friendship had combined together into the head rush of a whirlwind romance and it she had brought the better man out of him. Made him feel not only better about himself, but made him a better person, and he hoped, in the back of his mind that he did the same for her. That they brought the best out of each other.

The flush that rose across her face, told Caleb he was going to have to do a lot of more appreciative flirting with her, as lovely as it was to see her all red face - in certain circumstances a lot more than others - he wanted her to feel as sexy as he saw her. He wanted to be able to tell her she looked stunning and not think that he was just making it up, because, he had seen a lot of woman had slept with a lot of woman but none of them made him feel like Claire did. Made him want to shower her with nothing but flirtatious come ons and for her to just roll her eyes at him - which had happened on occasion - and tell him to stop being silly.

The shock of the answer to his question about Atlantis was still not really sinking in, he half heartedly pinched himself just to make sure he wasn't in some kind of strange dream. It hurt so that was a definite no on the dreaming front, the smile hadn't left his face though and although he was in public and wasn't meant to say anything about the SGC, Stargates, or Atlantis all he wanted to do was tell the nearest passer bys that she had agreed to go to a completely different galaxy with him.

He was tempted to pick her up and try the dancing thing again, but one crazy stunt was enough for him at the moment. He just couldn't stop smiling, he had not expected an answer not that night or even that weekend, it was everything he had hoped for and yes he had wanted her to say yes. It also meant what he was going to do later on that night that little bit more special for them.

"You know I love you right, like completely, no doubts, love you," he admitted sincerely. He hardly said them words, didn't like to say them too often for fear the effect of saying them would wear off. But they were the only words he could think to say to her in that moment, because he felt like his heart was going to burst.

"So long as you are sure, sure?" he asked once more just to be on the safe side. "If you are, then that calls for food and drink, my treat, first night in New Orleans, the bloke pays." He nodded his head in a 'an there' motion, as though he wasn't going to take any arguments about who would pay that night. He would pay, he'd be the gentlemen that night, it would be on his head, no matter how modern they were. He wanted to do this.

Claire chuckled, her eyes smouldering as she looked back at Caleb. Between the two of them, they were very much setting the tone for their evening, if not the whole weekend. Ever since that day in the gym, the passion between them had run high, sometimes threatening to overtake everything else. However, their deep friendship tempered that passion, and, Claire thought, that was a good thing. If it had just been the lust and passion that had burned since that day in the gym, she had no doubt they would have been over and done with in a couple of days.

"You can bet it's a bloody promise," she laughed, her voice husky and her eyes sparkling. "We only have this hotel room for a few nights, e ipo, and we're going to get our money's worth out of it!" Well, not to the point that they missed out on everything else in the city, but Claire certainly had every intention of putting it to good use.

If anyone had asked her a couple of months ago, Claire would have said that she was going to be perennially single, with no intentions to get into a relationship. She would have said that her friends and her work were enough for her, her family was all she needed, and she would have made every excuse in the book as to why she was alone. She would have told Caleb about it, and laughed, never suspecting that the crazy flirtatious chemistry between them would have exploded.

Tama had broken Claire's heart, and she had thought it irrevocably shattered. Slowly, secretly, throughout the course of their friendship, Caleb had retrieved every piece of that fragile heart and painstakingly put it back together, and, upon finding a tiny piece missing, had given her a piece of his own to carry with her.

A lump rose in Claire's throat as she realised exactly how much Caleb had come to mean to her over the last month. It wasn't something that she would ever be able to put into words, but she hoped she could show him with her actions.

Caleb was looking at her intently, and Claire could feel the blush heating her cheeks to an almost uncomfortable level. She didn't think that she would ever get used to him complimenting her, and she hoped that, some day soon, he might realise that she didn't need to be complimented. Having him there with her was more than enough, and was all the compliment and flattery she ever needed. Still, when he had that look in his eyes, Claire felt beautiful, and wanted, and knew that she didn't want to give this up.

How could she not have agreed to go to Atlantis with him?

It took Caleb a few seconds to process what she had said, and Claire slipped her arms around his neck, holding him close. It would appear that neither of them were able to stop smiling, and Claire's cheeks hurt. It had been a huge leap, but the smile on Caleb's face told her that she had done the right thing, and not just for her. If Caleb had gone to Atlantis without her, she would not only have lost her lover, her partner, but her best friend as well. How had Caleb managed to sneak into her affections so much without her even noticing it?

Claire gave a sharp intake of breath as Caleb told her that he loved her with the utmost in sincerity. It was only the second or third time that he had ever said it, so for him to utter those words out loud, especially in public, was a huge thing. Tears glittered in her eyes, and she blinked hard, not wanting to smudge her bloody make-up. "Kei te aroha au i a koe," she whispered, pulling him down into a soft kiss again, and thanking her lucky stars that she had responded to his flirt that day.

"I'm certain," Claire said, her voice firm and warm. "I wouldn't piss you about, you know that." She had kept him waiting long enough. She sighed and rolled her eyes as Caleb insisted on paying for dinner. "You know you don't have to do that, but thank you," she murmured, glancing through the windows. The place was starting to fill up now. "Maybe... we ought to go in, if we want to eat at all tonight?" Not that food was anywhere near the first thing on her mind now, not at all.

He laughed when Claire declared they were going to get there money's worth out of the hotel they had booked, he honestly - with all the innuendo promises they were making out on the street – hoped the place had nice good solid walls. Because yeah he looked forward to making the most of the very lovely room and it was lovely, almost felt like a bedroom in a house than a hotel room, but he didn't want them getting thrown out for being too noisy.

Caleb chuckled slightly at his own train of thought, too noisy it would a nice change to not have to try to be quiet. Especially when they had been so caught up in each other, that sleeping together on base meant being as subtle as possible. Not that they had done that all that often, he much preferred being with Claire at her apartment, it was nicer and a lot more private, plus that way he got to take his time. Enjoy every inch of Claire that he could before he couldn't hold out any longer, which was surprisingly not that much of a long time at the moment, Claire had turned him back into a teenager again.

The world seem to melt away around him, as Claire wrapped her arms round his neck – the heels made her more his height that evening – and pulled him closer into a kiss. It was like despite the crowds of people walking around them, no one seemed to matter in that moment except Claire and the answer she had given him.

The smile never left his own face, even when she kissed him, it was silly, he hadn't realised just how much her saying yes to going to Atlantis with him would mean. How much he had been hoping that the answer was a positive one, that she would throw caution to the wind and come with him, he didn't realise that in a sense he had been holding his breath.

He had prepared himself for the worse – after all he was known for one night stands, not committed relationships, he had been waiting for that other shoe to drop – told himself that if she said he would be understanding. He'd still love her, but he'd let her go, let her stay as he went off. Had even in the middle of the night when he was awake and no one else was, had even imagined what he would feel if she had turned him down.

But she hadn't, she had not done any of them things he had imagined, she had completely taken the rug out from underneath him and told him yes. He wanted to keep kissing her, tell her he loved her again and again and again, wanted to leave for Atlantis with Claire holding his hand right now. He felt, he felt like his chest was hurting with the adrenalin rush he was currently experiencing and he pulled her into another kiss.

This one lasting a little longer, a bit more passionate as he poured everything he was feeling into it, every word he couldn't speak, every feeling – that she could probably read on his face – into it. He didn't stop until it became essential that they both needed to breath, he didn't need either of them passing out by kissing, because he was sure in that crowded street someone would video it and stick it up on YouTube.

Pulling away slightly, breathing heavily he said, “I know you wouldn't, sweetheart,” it was true he knew deep down she wouldn't mess him around on that answer. She wasn't like that and for that he was so, so grateful for it. “I do have to do that, you've given me the best news, the least I can do is pay for dinner. Besides, you'll need to eat, am sure all the dancing and dancing we plan to do will need us to be at our best.”

He stepped to her side once more, noticing the crowds that were starting to mill into the restaurant, he nodded his head in agreement to Claire. Yeah heading inside now to eat would be wise, he took her arm once more and lead her into the restaurant, he actually had no idea if she had booked a table or if they were just meant to turn up? That was the one thing he had forgotten to ask her, he looked at her slightly bewildered at the amount of people he saw in there, he whispered, “Did you book us a table at all?”
