David Taft, Sergeant Major of the United States Marine Corp., Marine Recon. He's been a lifer since before he signed on, having a plan and the flexibility to hold that plan off to the side while doing what the Corp demanded of him. While he wasn't rank ambitious there have been repeated periods where if he didn't get promoted he was going to get discharged so he has actually excelled in his career (and made very tactical decisions about where to transfer) in order to remain within the structure as a primarily combat oriented asset. He's learned Arabic through immersion (deployments in Arabic speaking countries), he's got a degree in Criminal Justice as well as time with the Military Police which suits his sense of duty just fine, and has spent almost as much time getting shot at as he has spent sleeping in his lifetime.

Friends: He has colleagues, acquaintances, and people he finds perfectly tolerable to sit across from while he eats. Those are kinda like friends. The men that were his friends before he got so hardened are either civilians who wouldn't understand him anymore or men and women he met in basic/AIT/first assignment who died years ago or have moved on to civilian lives again. He's not opposed to friends, he just doesn't make an effort to be anyone but who he is and hasn't met a lot of people who get along with that.

Enemies: A Sgt Major doesn't hold grudges. A Sgt Major, like all other Marines, is informed of who his enemies are by the government of the United States of America. It's a long list, most days.

Lovers: If a woman gets it in mind to be his woman, Taft isn't one to be rude about it. He admires strength, determination, and a will to make ones future whatever it is one desires it to be. It's how he got where he is today. Thing is, he's been courted numerous times with various levels of intention, been married twice, and he's outlasted the lot of them. If a woman can accept that she's his mistress (no matter their marital status) and his wife is the Marine Corp, they'll likely live happily ever after.

Claire has no issues with the military in general. She just has issues with those who are assholes, the same way she does with civilians. She doesn't care what your rank or position is: everyone who ends up as her patient is treated equally, and she will do her damnedest to make sure that you leave her care as fit and we'll as possible.

How prone to getting injured is he? Would he be likely to have ended up under Claire's knife in the last year? Or at least being checked over by her?

He's not prone to getting hurt, he's learned a lot of lessons about winning clean victories over the years, but while he doesn't particularly care for being a patient he -does- care about keeping his men healthy, safe, and well. So he's more than likely dragged a few of his subordinates into the Med Bay by the ear over the last two years. His kind of soldiers are prone to minor bone breaks in the feet and hands, as well as major bone breaks in the wrists and shoulders (which would be where your lady comes in at her specialty, though that's hardly a life threatening emergency I guess...). Also, skin problems of the feet get around in the field, especially chafing that leads to infections. It's why Taft carries six pairs of socks.

We can also cover her having seen him, and maybe a early interaction, through his tendency to come check on any of his men who have been injured. He is gruff, silent, and foreboding most of the time but this is his silent way of showing that he really cares... if the fact that he'll run into enemy fire to retrieve one of his boys doesn't say it already. If not through one of those ideas... he occasionally eats food so they could always be forced to sit together in the cafeteria. :)

Sophie is just trying to get by. Its a new place with a whole lot of new faces.

I cant see the two of them passing each other in professional capacity - Although its entirely possible that she's attempted a friendly hello in the lunch hall/corridoor.

She's a persistent force if she needs something though - I could imagine that if she needs samples from one of your men or, yegads, yourself, that she'll be tall red headed shadow til she has want she wants.

That works. I can imagine they've seen each other around enough to be on "head nod" terms.

Its nice to see another lifer - Military being all that she's known I can see her appretiating someone a little closer to home then her Dad to share a story with.

She's not fussy when it comes to the rank of the men she associates with - Just as happy sharing a joke, and some beers with a Colonel as she would be with a Private - i can see her being known to Taft as a frequent accompaniment to his men.
I can see interactions in regards to an injury - That works as a jumping point. After all, she's not shy to fixing a soldier on the sly - Not every injury needs to be known to the world

If Sophie needs a sample from one of the men all she has to do is fill out the requisition form and he'll enforce it. If she wants it from him she'll have to keep an eye on the weather in Hell.

Yeah, on the sly would suit him just fine for healing. He doesn't socialize with with anyone under the rank of Sgt but he gets on well with his fellow sgts, especially if they are lifers. Officers tend to annoy him unless they respect what it took for him to get where he's at in the time it took him, and show a bit of respect for their often senior.

This would be so much like Jack, except without the shared history. Perhaps we could build that history through shared missions and other perils? Keep in mind in case the base gets invaded by the inevitable aggressive aliens tech.

Taft is a little less likely to make witty retorts than O'neill and comes from a far more aggressive military identity but otherwise they aren't so different. Taft isn't always certain how to deal with civilians but he doesn't hold anything against them, especially if they've ever pointed a weapon at the enemy and resolved to pull the trigger in defense of themselves and others.

That depends entirely on what you want to be doing with him with the shit goes down. ;)
